Do you agree the BBC should air this great historic speech?

The BBC has defended a decision to air Enoch Powell's 1968 "Rivers of Blood" speech on Radio 4.

The Archive on 4 programme, presented by BBC media editor Amol Rajan, will on Saturday broadcast the right-wing MP's anti-immigration speech - voiced by an actor - in full, for the first time.

The decision to do so was criticised as an "incitement to racial hatred".

The BBC said there would be "rigorous journalistic analysis" and the show was not endorsing controversial views.

It is part of history and all history weather good or bad is part of life and to ignore it is wrong.
If it was stopped that would be cencorship so let it seen by who ever wants to watch it.
Yes it will cause debate but that is good,there will be morons out there wishing to make something of it but these idiots are there anyway,that cannot be denied either

As long as the speech is heard in context it is ok.
Powell was clearly a racist trying to use people's fears to gain popularity for himself.
I believe as another poster stated that people mostly turned their back on him as different cultures mixed.
I still believe we have strong racist tendencies in the UK but no where near the levels that Powell predicted.

many of the contraversial parts of the speech were powel quoteing statements from his constituants the infamous "blackman will have the whip hand"is one such part of tbr speech atributed to powell ut is in dact him reporting these thoughts if listened to in context it completely changes its impact |

Gang violence is more to do with socioeconomic factors than race/colour. Also the majority of it (at least that which is reported in the media) is between British born people not immigrants. |

I think a critical review might have been acceptable but it would not warrant broadcast of the whole thing - it's inflammatory and probably illegal material now. We do need to learn from our mistakes but there are different ways to do this and giving swivel eyed frothing at the mouth types orgasmic pleasure isn't the right way. |

And now that we know it is all immigrants my next question is and where do differentiate between British and non British? Are the Huguenots who came here in the 1700's British enough for you? Maybe we should remove them? Why stop there? How about kicking out all those of Viking or Norman extraction, maybe we should go back further (and yes, this is hyperbole).

So let's be serious, where do you stand about the Poles who came in 1939 or the Indians and all the other Empire (as was)nationals that fought for us in WW2, and then settled here? What about the Windrush immigrants that came here to rebuild this country in 1947? Or the Ugandan Asians that came in the 70's? Or for that matter the Irish that have settled here over centuries.

I think the speech should aired after that we can make our own decision weather to listen to it on not and then form our own views.My own view is every decade the amount of racism I see and receive is getting lower and lower how ever when I receive it I feel like that 13 year old boy who whilst playing football for his school went to take a corner kick and one of the opposition players said don't let the paki take it he will open a shop and everyone was laughing at including my team mates and teacher who refereed the game. |

So out of interest how many criminals are there? How many rapists are there? What percentage are they of the immigrant population and how does that compare with the indigenous population? What about the criminals we exported to Spain many years ago because there was no extradition? You cannot make wild statements without facts! |
