Take back control of our borders...

To protect our citizens against threats internal and external, we need to increase our border guards by over 600%, arm them and give them extensive powers to detain migrants and deport failed asylum seekers.

This isn't a quote from a Brexiter, a member of the BNP or a right wing leader from Hungary or Poland.

This is what European Commission's president Jean-Claude Juncker said, albeit in summary form, in his annual state of the union address yesterday.

Earlier on Wednesday morning, German Chancellor Angela Merkel told legislators in Berlin that illegal migration poses a greater threat to the cohesion of the European Union than the eurozone crisis.

Were these two speeches a coincidence or carefully choreographed?

I think it would be quite funny if they started to refer to brits as illegal immigrants but no this is just a coincidence .. but you can’t really claim to be taking control of the borders if you are going to leave the one land border you have wide open and leave the other side to deal with any issues....

The fear of illegal immigration and the “Muslim threat” is clearly causing unrest.

And so I’m not suprised the EU are reacting to this as they have.

I suspect it is this “threat” which some have in mind when talking about taking back control of our borders .... I wonder if this had been in place a few years ago, would it have helped with fears ?

At the very least it may have help differentiate the idea of EU migration (and pros and cons) from this more intangible fear. Too often debates start on the former and end on the latter here.

(There’s a brexit thread here today which could have turned to Asian sex rings)

So they would need to tighten controls at internal borders between Schengen countries for this to work?

They already are. Visitors from outwith Scengen countries are about to start paying a security admin fee to enter and leave.

They already can... which is something not always known about with schengen

For example France closed all its borders after the Paris attack’s... schengen gives people the opportunity for Eu citizens to travel passport free but it does not override national security, so any country can still deny an Eu resident entry on security grounds

Well Merkel has certainly changed her tune to when she was saying "All welcome here" just a couple of years ago. It's all too little to late and both Juncker and Merkel are now trying to lock the stable door after the horse has bolted, incompetent clowns.

How can they close all the borders when there are no physical barriers?
