Google to charge EU phone companies/smartphone customers for use of its services.

American tech giant Google has announced it will charge European smartphone companies/customers operating in the EU a licencing fee for use of its services like Gmail, YouTube, maps and the Google play app store. They currently are pre installed onto all new smartphones in the box but Google announce this will no longer be the case in the EU. It comes after the EU hit Google with a massive anti competition fine running into billions and this is Googles response. So buying a new smart phone in the EU will now have the additional hassle and expense of downloading and paying for Google services.
Let's hope the UK can negotiate an exemption from this with Google after we leave the EU in March 2019. |

As stated in the OP it's not just Google, it will also be other Google owned services, like YouTube, Gmail, Google maps and the Google play app store. Your phone is going to look pretty basic without some of those services. |

They would lose a load of revenue from advertising and share prices would tumble if people looked for alternative sorces |

It will be very interesting to see how this goes. I don't see from Google's standpoint why they would then make an exception for the UK. And as you know we don't seem to be able to negotiate out way out of a paper bag at the moment.

What alternative sources? What realistic alternative is there to YouTube or Google play app store? Google for the most part has a monopoly on the market.
If you read the news story on this from Reuters then Google intends to make money on this by charging EU phone companies a licencing fee for use of its services to recoup the money it lost in EU fines. I can't see phone companies absorbing the extra costs involved and will most likely pass the expense onto customers. |

Which one is it though, you listed two different things, European customers, or European service suppliers.
Cause if it's the suppliers there needs to be a discussion about for example Samsung, who I think are still classed as South Korean phone supplier, yet arrange and have contracts with Google for pre-installing Microsoft software on their phones.
In addition, where's the tax billing address of Virgin Media, O2 ect? They dodge tax by being listed offshore, they can probably avoid this by being listed offshore.
If anything this is good. As it shows a massive business oversight and how money hungry the American corporates are, and bring again into public discussion tax avoidance and regulations. |

I read it as manufacturers that want to supply pre-loaded Google phones into the EU will have to buy a license to do so.
They could offer other operating systems such as Microsoft and derivatives but would they want to?
They will just buy the license and add a charge onto each handset. |

I agree with you mate i think google created more competition especially within the Sat Nav catagory, I use Google a lot they offer a huge range of services such as google docs which windows charge for. If google get forced to charge it will lead to Facebook having to as well as eBay as they all can be argued are leaders in there fields. |

Well there is always the Windows phone - but 500m customers lost - some will pay but a lot won't! As said advertising revenue will plummet - but we'll see. Out of curiosity why did Google get finded? |

actually...... oh centy..... I have some bad news for you.... you may end up eventually facing a potentially double whammy....
1) the same charge for the EU is being proposed for the UK.... even after brexit
2) UK customers will face potentially blocking from using their UK accounts in the EU since the UK will not longer be part of the European media market...(you know that story last week that uk people may not be able to use netflixs, youtube and bbc iplayer.... same would apply here) |

Downloading Google & Youtube app is additional hassle & expense...FUNNY you say that for this story yet you don't see any problem with the "additional hassle & expense" with probably needing a Visa to go to a EU Country after Brexit, or the "hassle & expense" of maybe requiring adittional driving permits.
So to answer as you have done in the past Centaur, get over it, it'll take 5 minutes & maybe a few quid to sort out at worst.

We shall see. Google have said this only applies to the EU, and after March 2019 the UK shall no longer be in the EU. Therefore it's reasonable to assume these measures won't affect the UK after we've left the EU. |

PS. It'll also take no extra effort as you can get a device mirror app that copies across all your apps automatically. You need to run that to copy across your contacts anyway.
So, no extra expense and no extra time. Thanks for trying though |

You really do live in cloud cuckoo land don't you, try actually reading what Google themselves have said on this. Google have said they will be charging an additional new licencing fee within the EU for these new measures, now whether the phone companies in the EU absorb these costs or they decide to pass the additional costs onto customers remains to be seen, but one way or the other it'll be more expensive to get Google services in the EU with the introduction of these measures. |

Or not pay google. Not charge the consumer. And let the individual download them if they so desire.
Okay that may take a few seconds longer than today. But let’s not pretend this is anything more than an EU bashing. As has been pointed out you’ve been a lot more forgiving of more cost and inconvenience off the back of the technical notes. |

This is actually pretty good news.
This is the same type of ruling Microsoft was on the receiving end of from the EU because it killed the browser market in the 90s by bundling Internet Explorer with Windows. As a direct result of that we've seen better competition and innovation since then with the likew of Google themselves investing in Chrome.
The licensing fee wont be anything end users need to worry about. Microsoft charges pc and laptop companies for Windows as well and its done use no harm and Google sells ads and they need eyeballs on search which is what theyre talking about unbundling so the fee wont be excessive because they need users using search. |

From what I could gather, they are going to license (charge) manufacturers of smart phones THAT use the android platform! There is no mention of consumers being charged directly, and I cannot see how a phone company could pass on charges for a customer using google maps, YouTube, google translate and the rest!! Furthermore would google attempt to introduce costs right across their productivity suite for iPhones? What app of Google’s would a iPhone be reliant on? |
