Why do you think they are doing it? U.N soldiers are getting ready, what type of war could it be if there is one? Lets hope there wont be one.

Russia and the Ukraine have been on the verge of war for ages. This boat crash thing is just another story in a long line of stories.

Why? Vlad is a nutter...that would be my guess.

Mr Putin sees the Ukraine as part of Russia and would like to bring it back into the fold. Many Ukrainians remember Soviet occupation none too fondly so are prepared to put up a fight.

Everyone seems to make out the Russian army is invincible but they were fought to a standstill and took heavy casualties in the Ukraine a few years back, which has caused problems back home as publicly Putin was denying that Russian troops were operating in the Ukraine, but a steady stream of body bags were going back and their families wanted to know why.

I have been to Ukraine twice.

Once in 2012 and again in 2013 just before the war started. Kiev was ok in 2012 but you definitely knew there was issues in 2013. I also was in Donetsk in 2012; this city is not far from the border and a lot of the residents still speak Russian, that was interesting

My tenner is on Putin and his boys, when his popularity drops he starts a war. The Russians love it, and no the Russian army isn’t invulnerable, most of its actually pretty shoddy, but they do do a good line in invasions and have massive numbers

The Ukrainians have geography in their favour, the only truly scary part of Putins military is his nuclear and chemical stockpile but he's not going to drop that on a country he wants to occupy and right on his own borders. That's not to say he wouldn't turn any other NATO countries who get involved into glass car parks though...

So the Russian army isn’t up to much ?

Mmmm.... I wouldn’t bet on that being the case if an all out war took place .

The previous encounter over Crimeria was a just a bit of a scuffle in reality . Mind you the Serbs are a nasty bunch too , so it could be interesting .

I doubt it very much if there will be a war. I imagine things happen all the time between the two country's but as the news are trying to take as much media attention away from May and her disaster of a Brexit deal

"So the Russian army isn’t up to much ?

Not especially, they have numbers but most of them are badly paid and badly treated conscripts barring some elite units. They like to show off their new shiny tanks and aircraft in parades but in reality they can't afford them in any great number so the vast majority of their kit is obsolete cold war stuff from the 70's and 80's. Their navy is mostly rotting in forgotten shipyards and that ancient aircraft carrier "Admiral Kuznetsov" that went chugging past the UK last year on it's way to Syria is the only operational one they have.

They could do a lot of damage without question, but I'm confident a determined NATO counter attack would stop them if nuclear weapons were kept out of it.

But then most are just happy to believe the crap they are fed by the western propaganda machine.

It also needs saying most NATO forces ain’t all that.

Exactly. It's a little bit like a firm of accountants going into a Mafia controlled business and suggesting that they could just slip on a (metaphorical) condom for protection and come and do some much nicer friendly business with the accountants other friends.

Seeing as russia is one of the 5 permanent members of the security council needed to back action it seems unlikely they’d vote for a war against themselves

Russia is a "subversive" enemy.

The ukranians voted to be part of the eu in 2014.

I respect Estonia and Ukraine more than Russia. Estonia and Ukraine are our friends and Russia is the enemy.

Russia won't do anything directly vs uk because uk has nukes.

This country and the EU should support Ukraine.

Not appease the Russians.

Russia has made a "subversive" chemical attack on uk already..

They are not to be trusted.

They are just a bunch of mafia who get d*unk and do sexual assaults (Berlin 1945).

They are a lesser culture. They aren't as civilized as Britain.

Nobody in eastern europe wants the Russians taking over again.

The people who support Russia in that region are ethnic Russians or working for the Russians.

These are nations who struggled for indipendence from Russia.

Can't wait for the next McMafia series. Whilst I wouldn't condemn the entire population, I did pic up a modest anecdote this week at the local Spa, opposite a bus shelter at 10 am a family Man Woman two teenage children, all drinking cans of lager, I said to the guy in the shop "they started early" reply "they have been there for 1 and a half hours and that's the forth round so far, Russians, there are a few families on that estate and they drink larger all day long

As per normal we should not get involved, we always seem to jump on the band wagon, which is probably why most people don’t like the British

It is up to others to sort this issue, we have enough on our plate with Theresa May and the Brexit ( hate that word) agenda..

Really?

I think you need to read a little 1920's, 30's and 40's history as it relates to Germany, its annexing parts of Europe and the final result of their pacification by those who claimed it had nothing to do with them and how that worked out for the whole world. Then note how history repeats its self. Finally apply the above to Russia today and its aggressiveness towards most the rest of the world.

You may gain a little foresight, then again you may choose to repeat history and refuse to acknowledge the growing threat to our ever so fragile world peace.

Just look at history on how world war starts.

WW1 Austrian crown Prince murdered by a Serb in Sarajevo.

WW2 Hitler annexes Austria - because they both speak German, then sees how many other countries he can take over before somebody stands up to them.

Russia takes Crimea, and then another part of Ukraine - got away with it - pattern forming. The Russians tools a pasting in Afghanistan and so did the Brits (twice) and the Americans.
