here is a vision of the meritocracy party. this is for those that are looking for a different way of government rather than the same old labour vs conservative bull.
A single, extremely high-quality education system available to everyone: free of charge. No more discrimination between state and public schools.
A monetary system that is under public control with accountable officials leading the country's banks. No more private shareholders holding sway over the fundamental basis of our economy.
A Millionaire Estate Tax: you can inherit up to £1,000,000. Anything over that amount is taxed at 100% and used to fund social services such as the NHS.
A debt cancellation policy. We're swimming in debt. How much of it is even legitimate? We pay billions a year in interest payments because we keep borrowing and borrowing from banks to pay our existing debt. They get bailed out while millions of us descend into poverty and despair. The people deserve their own bailout.
A public lobby composed of experts in their fields of expertise, who pressure Parliament to act in the interests of the People and not those of a shadowy global cartel who are only interested in sucking wealth from your pocket into theirs. |

I'm all for people holding positions in government based in merit.
I would like the Health minister to have a background in health and the education minister to have a background in education.
What we get are ministers with a background in law and politics.
They surround themselves with experts but these experts cannot make them understand.

Start with something more grounded I think.
You want to be Minister for Health. Mandatory 10 years service in the NHS or Public Health England. Purely admin or managerial roles should not count, but if it's part of a more skilled role fine.
In effect duplicate it do get what the Roman Republican system did well (overall in historical context) in the 4th to 2nd century BC.
Proven merit in ink, and proven merit in action gets party support. |

I'd have thought running a hospital or being in charge of a service would be invaluable experience for someone with aspirations to run the whole shaboodle.

That's exactly what the party is proposing, Lets take the health service for example. That the minister for health should actually be chosen by the people of the health service. I'm not talking about a career Politian but some one who knows what the service needs to be at its best.

I understand the point you are making. But the NHS is not run for the benefit of its employees, it exists for the benefit of the public.
Confine the electorate to the NHS staff and whoever promises the biggest increase in pay is sure to win.

The most effective style of government is one that develops policy from evidence.
The least effective style is the one that develops policy from ideology.
Too often, we see politicians implement policy based on ideology, when the evidence would point a rational person in a different direction.

The problem is democracy. We are ruled by ignorance or by con men who can fool the masses.Plato was a critic of democracy for this very reason.Rule from a place of knowledge was his preferably form of governance.

I couldn't agree more, all policys that define how we live our life should be one routed in fact and evidence not one that a party has descided that will get them 4 more years of power. Look at Labour and the conservatives each blaming each other for the state of the country. all it takes is a phone call to say lets work together, but neither will give for fear of losing votes. |

I like this idea OP, and I was having this exact conversation last night. Let non MPs be put in charge of services. Right now a PM can only choose from a limited pool of people, so you're unlikely to get the best.
I think if we're going to go it alone after Brexit we should aim to be a progressive country that everyone looks to as a model. Bin stupid drug laws and free up the police to deal with more serious crimes, pay teachers real money for a change (good education is the basis for an improvement in everything in society) and fund the NHS properly.
Crazier thoughts include unlimited speeds on the motorway and cheap petrol, but I'm not holding my breath for those.  |

A meritocracy is a good idea but meritocratic technocracy would be my preference .
We seem to be heading towards a corporatocracy which could be horrendous or something incredibly good.The US is a corporatocracy in all but name . |
