Scotland is out of date...

Jump to: Newest in thread

By (user no longer on site) OP     over a year ago

When I visit my adopted home of the West Midlands or take a trip to London or places like that...it feels like it's 2016. But then I come back to my home country and it's back to the 80's or 90's here.

So called "neds" driving past blasting out....happy hardcore...seriously..in 2016 and they thing happy hardcore is still cool. Did Urban music not happen here? I was away for a while...There's no new music scene really. No Grime, or urban type thing...instead..we get WeeMan. I played that in front of some of my Wolverhampton Jamaican/English friends thinking they'd get the humour...It was embarrassing.

As for the way black people are perceived here...that peeves me too. Walking through Kilmarnock and 2 black guys selling gas/electric and the guy I'm with says "what color are they"....Another guy..talking about actors and I said I liked Tom Hardy, then I said Denzel Washington was good too..."Oh a black guy" he said. I think some people up here still picture black people as Africans. Never really seen U.K native one that speak different and are more up to speed with the modern world than most Scots (or at least Ayrshire people) seem to be.

The words used never really change. In Birmingham/Black Country for example, I noticed over the years that slang words would change and evolve because of different cultures there...but here...people still use the word "Wideo"...That just sounds so 90's to me now..."wideo."...yeah. It's embarrassing. Sounds dumb. Almost nerdy...

There's other things too but there you go. Scotland isn't "cool" or modern really. Maybe Glasgow or Edinburgh are slightly more up to date but at least Ayrshire is not in the 21st century yet...

I think Scotland needs more immigration. Will bring it up to speed with the modern world etc...It's the Monoculture of Scotland that puts it behind. Need more diversity here...

Any thoughts?

I'm expecting abuse from insecure people but my frame of mind doesn't permit me to be offended.

Like I said, don't know if it's all of Scotland but certainly in Ayrshire...No offence Ayrshire people but fucking hell....It's not 2016 here.

Sorry I never realised these niche genres where the epicentre of 'cool'

To compare London to Ayrshire is laughable.

No offence OP, but I've never heard so much nonsense in my life.

You've presented your perceived disappointment at Scotland's social progress (or lack of) on two or three isolated examples that come across as trivial.

Respectfully, I'd suggest the problem you are feeling is with you, and not that of the country or it's people and progresses.

That said, I respect your right to your opinion.

Never been to Telford but Wolverhampton people are a largely friendly bunch and diverse population. I'm talking of my experience only so others may have had a different experience. It depends who you know and socialise with.

I think when it comes to tolerance, Scotland may be more tolerant because it's not as prevalent here. Walk down certain streets in Wolves (Dudley Road for example) and you could be the only white person or at least one of just a few.

The Black Country/Bham area is a lot more vibrant than Ayrshire so if you were bored there then, possibly like me, you are the one with the problem.

I think at the end of the day it's the youth culture/new music scenes I'm talking about. The Scottish "youth" (under 30) are just a bit 90's still. It doesn't evolve over time. Most so called "neds" are walking around in track suits that look like they were bought in 1995!. I feel the Scots youth need a better dress sense...

Everyone should really just agree with me and change your ways to please me...

Thanks

I love Scotland for its country roads, peace & tranquillity, and feeling of home.

.

I work offshore where we are a huge mix of all UK locations, as well as many further afield in the World, we can all get on together and part of getting on is being able to take the piss from each other, Jocks, Geordies, Mackems, scousers, cockney twats, the lot

.

but trying to compare any part of Scotland to London is laughable

After this thread the image I have of you is a white guy with a badly put on jamie an accent and your jeans dropping down to your knees, if I'm right Ali G was so 90's"

And no I don't see how that would be more diverse. I live on Earth so any Earthly culture can be my own. I don't want to be handcuffed by one culture. I like variety. I also love science so there is balance.

Forgot to add...While we're on the subject of Jamaicans...If you say 'beer can' repeatedly it starts to sounds like a Jamaican saying Bacon.

beer can beer can beer can beer can...

Anyway, I concede. Nothing wrong with Scotland. It is what it is. (Still prefer the West Midz though...)

And for the record, no, I'm not a wigga.

Be sure to visit Glasgow on Sunday. The sights you see you will never forget and you will hear music but not as you'd know it. Hang around into the evening for those magical cultural moments that can only be experienced in this fine city on Old Firm Day.

Hopefully you'll get good service on the Megabus back down south tho!!

Have fun and enjoy yourself Xxx

Boomboclart! Yea man I hear what your saying on the mixing things up a lil bit with a bit of diversity because in certain pockets of Scotland it's like a timewarp/twighlight zone where some folk still think it's cool to sniff glue and stab each other with broken buckfast bottles for something to do and there are certain outdated and unacceptable schools of thought such as rampant sexism,racism....although I personally think that Scotland is a much more tolerant place than England although I've technically experienced alot more racial incidents here than in England but at least they're nicer about it here than England for the most part statistically speaking Englands bnp membership is something like 6% compared to Scotland's 2% ....the Scots have long been an oppressed people who can relate to the plights of other oppressed people....I love it here for all it's pro's and cons....maybe Ayrshire isn't as much up with the times but I've found that Dundee, fife,Perth,Edinburgh and Glasgow has come a long way in terms of being mode diverse and I never ceases to surprise and amuse me to see some youngster here listening to grime,Jamaican dub/dancehall etc....when not that long ago I was the only one I knew rocking the "ethnic" vibes whilst all my mates were fighting me to put on some rave/techno/trance etc.....the wee man has even come a long way since his first big hit...he's a great guy...I even facilitated a rap battle video with him a while back which was really cool he's assisting in the inevitable change of the scene by embracing new thing's and paving the way for others to follow

A world of my own

Well this was entertaining

I've never lived in the Midlands. However I did spend a few years in Surrey. My Edinburgh accent was often complimented and my 90s music was never complained about.

As much as I loved my time in the South I still came back home.

It is, after all where the heart is.

You see Scotland didn't have riots in the early 2000 that's why we are back in time , when you seen all these people that are into grime music setting cars on fire and looting Argos and jd sport in happend in Birmingham , Manchester and London , but not the more civilised Glasgow or Ayrshire , if your not happy here you won't be missed

Through any era Scotland has provided the music scene with singers and bands of huge note . More recently Palo Nutini , The fratellies ,Twin Atlantic,KT Tunstall , Biffy Clyro,Franz Ferdinand to name afew and highly acclaimed in the music industry. So maybe it's your music taste that's dated op.

I'm not Scots but only found a warm ,open hearted and inclusive welcome from the Scots people . There are idiots and racists anywhere if you choose to look for them . I personally not experienced it here but maybe due to the the circles I move in are normal educated people .

The Scots people refused the waters meters where the south folded .We have free prescriptions ,the envy of most south of the border and fantastic education system (which I have experienced both here and down south . ) so hardly backward and dated lol.

If you feels so strongly the grass is greener elsewhere the have the courage of your convictions rather than bleating negatively .

there's riots in every scheme every weekend and that has more to do with scumbags than any kind of music that they may choose to listen to..the riots down south erupted on account of police brutality that lead to the shooting of a young unarmed black male

I agree, racism is when you undermine an individual or a group of individuals based apon their ethnicity, color of skin, cultural practices, choice of music etc...discriminating against someone based on the color of their skin is most definitely a clear cut prime example of racism aswell as lack of intelligence, understanding and common sense quick folks grab a book, learn and read something!

It can be hard yes if you let it be. There is always help on offer though for those who really want it. I was brought up on the Isle of Iona. Disgusting place. They bullied my brother off the island just because he was a bit different (Autistic.) So island people are very much "be like us or we'll discriminate and not include you".

The insecure comment is true. Disagreeing with me isn't insecure but being offended by my view is insecure. That's just psychological. You can't be offended if you have no ego. Or if you are the observer rather than your identity.

With the torture stuff it was a guy in Stevenston who was telling me about it all when I moved. The cultural stuff I'm realizing now (thanks to other peoples points) isn't a big deal. The people I've met seem largely friendly and some of the scenery is very nice. If it's a bit 90's with dress sense/music...it's not important really. Not my preference but who am I to judge. Maybe I need one of these Ayrshire or Glasgow women to punish me for being a bad boy

I live in Fife, Scotland and there is a bit of a Heavy Metal scene here, it's not that big compared to london, but look where all the money is . as a guitar player myself I find musical taste is quite personal to the individual. My wife is a classic rock chick being into Meatloaf, Cher, and all kinds of pop. I am more into the heavier stuff Maiden,Priest,Metallica, Trivium ect. We both get on really well and accept that music is what we make it

I refer you to my OP where I state I can't be offended. I recommend it to people, try not having an identity. I learn't it from a guy called Jiddu Krishnamurti (on YouTube) and books like The Power of Now. Not having ego/identity or observing rather than being the observed. Give it go, it has good results

I'm not into happy hardcore or use the term wideo nor heard it in a long time But does it really matter what music people listen to. I've friends from all over the world whom I share a pint with and I'm glad of the diversity I see in this country. This includes those stuck in little time warps from the 80s and 90s. As long as people are happy that's all that matters. I'd not put anyone down for it.

But it's not offensive to others. Why would my opinion be offensive to anyone unless they have given themselves a rigid identity or a self image and my views don't match their self image? It's a choice...

I HAVE SPOKEN!!

I'm actually starting to like the OP "

I grew up in a multi cultural yorkshire city and to be contravershal I saw many cultures come and segregate themselves from the existing population. This created no go areas for certain races and made it an unpleasnt place to be at times.

This still exists today whenbI revist and is even worse.

Before anyone screams racist I am not I am a realist who through experience has seen changes to areas and not for the better.

Recent tv documentries on this topic filmed by the police bare witness to the tensions between ethic groups. And issues of cultires clashing to the extent that they explode.

I am very happy to be part of a multi racial community as long as all parties are willing to except each others cultures and views whilst still been part of the native community without creating barriers that exclude people.

The fact that Scotland isn't modern is by itself, very cool. It doesn't need to be 'hip'. It sells itself nicely, literally.

As for colour perceptions and immigration, I agree, we do need more. Scotland's increasing diversity is an amazing thing and only good for the country.

Colour wise, I still remember like it was yesterday back in 1990 getting off the train to do a gig in the Marquee in London, as a very sheltered country lad (4 people in my class at school country small!) and near shitting a chicken when I saw coloured folks. Had genuinely never seen anyone who wasn't white before and there they were almost a majority where I got off. A proper 'fuhkinell!!'

Grime though, I actually really like it. Son listens to it a lot and I've even downloaded some J Cole and Post Malone just half an hour ago!

Bit about your Neds blasting out 90s shite, what can you do when Scotland's premier 'music festival' has that kind of stuff as its headliners constantly? It lives in the past and services these folk.

"I think this is about just yanking chains and seeing what the reaction will be.

This guys not on fab looking to swing, he is looking for reactions, his profile is as boring as his so called observations and opinions.

Yes my profile is very sparce just now. Not looking to meet for sex that much just now, just like the forums and when I'm ready I'll start looking for something more. My observations and opinions are clearly not boring or no-one would have replied...

"

They may not be boring but they are for effect. Your points of view are exactly that they belong inside your own head, its your opinion.

To say Scotland is MONOCULTURAL is laughable. Go to the Scottish Government website and see how many language choices for translation that are available.

History will teach you that Scotland has offerred some of the worlds greatest discoveries. They led then and in some instances still do . I have had the opportunity to live and work all over the world but never found a more setlled place than Scotland. I met my mrs here my kids were born here and iam very proud of that despite being born an englander.

It may have its quirks but that is all part of its charm.

Why else would millions come to visit year after year?

If you're prepared to endure an evidentially, miserable existence, purely for the attainment of money, then I'm afraid my sympathy for you has run out.

If you're not already regretting this choice, then I expect you will some day.

There appears to be only one dope here, and, IMO, he deserves all the abuse coming his way.
