Avid Guardian readers will have seen this already but I thought it was good. I got it wrong and would have considered myself quite good at these things .

[names changed to protect the innocent, you never know if any of these guys are swingers...]

So here goes:

Alice is looking at Bob, but Bob is looking at Eve. Alice is married but Eve is not. Is a married person looking at an unmarried person?

A. Yes

B. No

C. Not enough information

(Alice isn't transitively looking at Eve or in line of sight...)

Good luck!

I'm slightly confused but convinced it's C.

Imagine them standing in a line Alice is looking at Bob and Bob at Eve. Bob isn't looking at Alice so regardless of whether Bob is married or not he's not not looking at Alice. The only person we know who is married (I think my brains a bit frazzled with names) Bob is looking at Eve but that's irrelevant not knowing Bobs status so there's not enough information. So if it is A I'm convinced the newspaper is wrong... I think.

It hinges on the realization that despite not being explicitly told Bob's marital status, he can only be married or unmarried.

In the case where he's married, he's looking at Eve, who is unmarried = Yes.

In the case where he's unmarried, Alice is looking at him = Yes.

The point is whether Bob is married or not then one person looking at another IS married... if Bob is unmarried then Married Alice is looking at him... if Bob IS married then he is looking at Eve... in either case there is always one married person looking at an unmarried one

Ah but Bob could be married legally in another country e.g. polygamously but that marriage would not be recognised in the UK - so Bob could be both married and un-married which sort of means a third state in-between the two of not quite being married! So the answer is C.

Bob is married to Alice. Bob & Alice are not swingers. Bob sleeps with Eve & Alice finds out. How long does Bob have to live?

A) 10 minutes

B) 1 day

C) Bob is already dead
