They say it's because they not on the app or its its because they moved since made the account I thought if it shows the distance on gps it would b accurate? X

Why would you be searching who is near to you? Meets are not allowed.

I'm not I have had messages from people saying they are near but their gps says otherwise! One even insisting he works where I work! I dont belive him! And its creeping me out tbh! I just wondered if any one knew if the gps could show wrong? I'm not meeting anyone any time soon! X

I don’t think it’s related to gps.. if you look under personal details you enter your postcode.. for local searches.... so if someone alters their postcode they can look as though they are local...

As above; I have my postcode set to somewhere else so I show up as local to there. I don’t have my Gps on but if I did that would give away my true location.

She never mentioned anything about meeting

Should we have the search function disabled now?

I regularly check who is near, not because I have any plans to meet, just because I'm a nosy cow

If they use a VPN then they usually show up at the servers location.

It can also depend on if you are using a VPN or who your ISP is. My Internet geolocation often says we are in London, North West or Scotland - essentially miles from where live.

If they're on Android then there are plenty of GPS faking apps....you turn it on, select on the map where you want to "appear" to be and you phone thinks that's where you are.

I turn off my GPS location on my phone and all apps so my location on here is only what I type in.

If I set my location as Liverpool, that’s what it shows. But if I turned my GPS back on it would show a different distance xx

It is because the person hasn't allowed the site access to their location on their device I think. Or they don't have it switched on, on their device i.e. on the mobile app you can switch it on or off xx

This.

If I don't have my location turned on or allow Fab access to my location it will show the last place I had it turned on, I may also need to refresh it.

So my GPS could still show me at home but in actual fact I'm 100 miles away in London.

I'm not sure how accurate the "who's near?" is, had someone message me recently who insisted that I was very close to where he was, but in actual fact I was almost 40 miles away (thankfully )

It's generally accurate if u both have ur GPS turned on. A few glitches I've seen. If u don't want ur location given away too much turn ur GPS off at work

If you use a VPN you can appear to be wherever in the world you want to be.

You are right. But using a VPN would be easy to spot as they are usually across the world

The servers send the information not gather the location. The ping is from the satellites in orbit

they hid your location as they are designed to do along with your IP (which is the locator to device) along with other stuff like site visits etc. all encrypted too.

That’s not what I said. I’m a media and data specialist so I’m very much a guru of these processes

I show as being 100 miles away because that's the post code I put in. I only show up as where I am when I have my GPS on which is rarely

Benidorm Spain

Pretty pish here. I’m in Spain so need to use. Uk postcode which I think confuses people.

However, I allow location on here so it should in theory be ok... not so!

I get messages from all over the UK, not just Edinburgh, saying I’m showing as near to them. Anything between 2-10 miles mostly. If I do a near me search here, very few show up. Now this wasn’t always the case so don’t know what’s changed.

For the avoidance of doubt, I’m talking pre covid when this place was massively busy. I know a lot of ex pats have asked for us to be able to use non UK postcodes/areas as loads still subscribe (myself included) as it would be so much better
