there's a few different restraint positions that give an element of the control back to those receiving. I still think there has to be that mental spark otherwise the acts are just that - acts. I have switched and for me, as a sub being done to if it was just by someone casually met it did not carry the same zing as with someone I knew and trusted and was hugely attracted to.

As someone who strangles people for a hobby and has been choked out on numerous occasions there is some science behind it...
