Tuesday, 4th August 2020.

Four more groups of foreign nationals are allowed entry with their families from today.

The groups are holders of permanent residence permits, and workers who have individual work permits, or have special entry arrangements either individually, or through their employers.

They must all have health certificates issued by their home governments, and Thai Embassy or Consulate entry certificates. They will all also be quarantined for 14 days upon arrival.

Wednesday, 5th August 2020.

Thai tourist industry representatives have made proposals to the Tourism and Sports Ministry which are designed to help the industry during the rest of this year.

The proposals are for package holidays costing B100,000 (about £2,500), to designated destinations. They will only be made available to people living in foreign cities that have been virus-free for 30 days, and who can provide infection-free certificates.

Plus the Thai economy is in landslide,so they will be wanting to get tourists back soon.

Speculation.

Phuket is a popular tourist destination with dedicated infrastructure, so it will probably be a “designated destination” for the proposals made on the 5th of this month about the revival of the tourist industry (see above).

Whether visitors from the UK will be allowed will depend on the virus situation here, of course.

Reading that it looks very unlikely. But myself I was not planning to go until may next year as I have a voucher from a 5 star hotel to use at the same hotel but with a year limit. I think if your planning before then it will involve quarantine when you get there...and who knows if you get stuck there for months if they ground the flights. But eact to thier own..

I've been monitoring the official releases yup.

Our trip is researched, booked and is paid in full. It's £5000+ but isn't just Phuket airport. It's a multi destination so until Emirates cancel our 5 flights or virgin holidays cancel it, I'm counting down and optimistic

Quarantine on return to the UK isn't an issue really but we're only in Thailand for 16 days and in 2 different destinations so quarantine or isolation that side wouldn't be viable for us

There seems to be an additional threat to the reopening of Thailand, and it has nothing to do with the virus.

An increasing number of students are now demonstrating openly against the current King. They argue that the King should be accountable to parliament, he should moderates his use of public funds, stay out of politics and stop controlling important army units. This kind of protest is totally alien to most Thais, who may nevertheless secretly agree with it.

Since he came to the throne, the new King has:

1. Thrown Parliament out of the country’s National Parliamentary Building, which was on his land. And at the same time he evicted the Bangkok Zoo. And no reasons for these peremptory actions were ever published.

2. Declared that the huge assets of the Crown Property Bureau are his personal property, and not notionally held in trust for the benefit of the Thai people, as they were under the late King Bhumibol.

3. Taken personal command of all military units based in Bangkok.

4. Been instrumental in the decision earlier this year to dissolve a dynamic new political party, which had attracted the support of many younger voters. Consequently, they feel that the military-dominated political system has denied them a voice.

5. Lived almost exclusively in Germany.

All of this is extremely provocative for the conservative, royalist powers-that-be, and there are fears of massacres, like the one of October 1974.

Martial law my be on the horizon.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand has proposed that a means of opening the country to foreign tourists should be tested by a pilot project in October.

This would involve hotels in Phuket which are capable of providing the tourists with a one-square-kilometre quarantine exclusion zone.

The tourists would arrive on charter flights, after extensive health checks and certifications in their home countries. They would spend the first two weeks of their four-week stays in the selected hotels and quarantine zones, where they would be isolated and monitored for signs of the virus.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand has proposed that “all comers” unrestricted foreign tourism should not be allowed until a Covid-19 vaccine is developed.

Until then, only high-end, long-stay foreigners and medical tourists should be allowed in. They should have proof that they are virus-free, and should be tightly controlled.

They don’t give any hint of the proof that should be available for the efficacy of the new vaccines, e.g. the Chinese quickie.

The returnees would have to be from “safe” countries. They would be subjected to medical examinations before boarding their flights and upon arrival in Thailand, where they would be quarantined for 14 days upon arrival.

I’ve spent every winter in Thailand since 2007. I am a very handsome man there! Sadly I really can’t see myself getting back there this year...the Government find themselves between a rock and a hard place. The country is apparently Covid free but keeping the borders closed to tourists with a view to keeping the virus out is causing untold economic damage and hardship to all those involved in the tourist industry....not just airlines and hotels, but laundries, taxi drivers, shops, restaurants etc and of course the girls who also often support their families.

The Phuket proposal due to start in October hasn’t even been finalised yet, but really looks like a non starter for holidaymakers, though it may enable some of the longstayers a chance to return.

I really do hope the Government are able to come up with something workable to open the borders. I am in touch with a number of Thai friends, and their situation at the moment is grim.

Sunday, 6 September.

Bad news.

The government's plan to allow about 200 Australian and New Zealand visitors to Phuket next month under special quarantine conditions may be delayed. This is because there has been a case of local transmission in Thailand – the first in three months. The patient is a Thai DJ, and all of his contacts in Bangkok and Nonthaburi are being traced.

Three Thai men caught the virus in Singapore, recovered, and were certified as being virus-free by the local Thai embassy. On arrival in Thailand, they were asymptotic, but were diagnosed as being infected by Covid-19. Attempts are being made to discover the reason for this anomaly. One or both of the tests could have given an incorrect result, or the men could have been re-infected.

So two more possible delays to a reopening date.

The target is up to 1,200 people a month, who would each spend a total of about £20,000 during the 90-day stay. That’s about £220 per person per day. I spend about £200, but that’s in only a three-star hotel, but does include entertainment in the dark, which probably won’t be available.

The scheme is aimed at people who are looking for somewhere warm to spend the winter where there is an extremely low risk of catching the virus.

Its 90 days minimum stay to be allowed.

Your insurance should cover you on that one though

Anyone know much about Singapore...eg Visa's and length of required stay?

I would be ok, with having to go for minimum of 3 months = 90 days.

But because of my age, I can't get insurance cover for more than 90 days.

So joining up the dots, looking difficult.

The Thai government’s Department of Disease Control has stated that initially visitors will only be allowed from low-risk countries like China, Japan, Kuwait and Myanmar. I don’t think that the UK will be “low risk” any time soon.

In addition to proving that they have access to a not yet specified minimum amount of money in a bank account and health insurance, prospective tourists will also have to comply with strict virus control measures in their home countries. These involve an unspecified self quarantine period with tests at the beginning and end, which must be less than 72 hours before they leave, and proof that they have avoided crowds during those hours.

To further complicate the process, this health check routine will have to be synchronised with one of the three charter flights allowed into Thailand every week.

There must be destinations with sun and beaches that have less demanding entry requirements. Probably most takers will be rich retired people worried about what is happening to the villas they own.

A consortium of Thai insurers is offering policies which comply with the tourist entry requirements.

The cover will be for claims up to B3.2 million (£8,000). Premiums will range from B2,560 to B43,200 (£64 to £1,080), depending on the levels of Covid-19 risk in the tourists’ home countries, and the required duration of each policy. This must be between 30 days and one year.

Friday, 25 September.

Two returning Thais who fully recovered from the virus infection overseas, have tested positive for the virus. It seems in their cases, infection didn’t result in immunity.

A bit worrying!

The first group of 300 tourists will be allowed to enter the country in early October, and the second group a week later. If none of these people are found to be infected, the quarantine period may be reduced to seven days, and the group size may be increased in November. Details of what will happen if any of the tourists are found to be infected have not yet been published.

Tomorrow, the government will extend the state of emergency to the end of October. So ordinary tourists like us will not be allowed into Thailand.

The high-end, long-stay tourists have a new hoop to jump through. They will have to show copies of bank statements which have deposits of at least B500,000 (£12,500) or the equivalent, during the last 6 months.

The Tourism Council Of Thailand is expecting only 50,000 foreign tourists to come during the next three months, and, if there’s a vaccine, only about 20 million next year – about half the 2019 total. If there is no vaccine, then next year’s total will be down to just hundreds of thousands.

The way this country's going, I reckon B30 is more likely! No common margate, national debt in the trillions and greater than a year's GNP, and we have to find the money from somewhere to buy over half of the food we eat (currently) from foreigners.

Chinese and Taiwanese only at the moment , Scandinavian is likely next if the initial visitors don't kick off covid here again.

The short answer is “NO”.

They are letting in only Chinese nationals on two charter flights from Guangzhou.

If everything goes OK with this lot, charter flights from other “virus-safe” countries will be allowed entry. It may be possible to get into Thailand on one of these later charter flights if you can comply with all of the visa requirements, and if travel is not restricted to nationals of the country that the fight departs from.

The Thai Interior Ministry has stated that these are the latest requirements for visa applications:

1. Proof of virus-free status.

2. Proof of payment for accommodation during the 14-days quarantine period.

3. Proof of payment for accommodation during the rest of the 90-day stay, or proof of property ownership.

4. A Thai health and accident insurance policy with cover for at least B400,000 (£10,000) inpatient costs and B40,000 (£1,000) outpatient costs.

5. A Thai health insurance policy with cover for at least B3.16 million (£79,000) of Covid-19 treatment costs.

The Thai embassy will no doubt inform you of the latest developments.

Probably the Thai people in the embassies and those responsible for processing visitors who arrive at the international airports are not sure exactly what to do yet. It’s all a bit new, and there are several different “authorities” publishing info that is sometimes contradictory.

During the latter half of August, something calling itself “the Tourism Council of Thailand” carried out a survey of Thai people living in the major tourist resorts of Chiang Mai, Koh Samui, Krabi, Pattaya and Phuket. It found that about 50% of the people didn’t want any foreign tourists under any circumstances. Whilst only about 1,300 people were interviewed, I believe the result is a fair reflection of how the Thai people in general feel. They have all been frightened by the media reports of this and previous Chinese viruses’ effects.

In the beginning, I thought that the country would be open again for tourists during August – THIS YEAR! How wrong can I get?

We need a vaccine, and we need it NOW!

The Thai Public Health Minister has asked the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration to reduce the quarantine period for visitors to the country from 14 days to 10 days. This would make the arrangements for tourist a bit more attractive.

The Department of Medical Services claims that Thailand is producing its own anti-flu drug called “Favipiravir”, which seems to have the effect of reducing the severity of the Covid-19 symptoms.

According to the director-general of the Department of Medical Services, Thailand is ready to cope with a second wave initiated by tourists. There are 400 beds ready for virus patients in Bangkok, with a further 1,600 available around the rest of the country.

According to the chairman of the Government Pharmaceutical Organisation, there are enough supplies of face masks and PPE. More can now be made in Thailand.

According to the acting director-general of the Department of Disease Control, it has about 1,000 rapid investigation teams and plans to triple the number.

According to the Interior Minister, there are 12 state quarantine facilities in Buri Ram, Chon Buri, Phuket, and Surat Thani. Another 84 are in preparation around the country.

According to the governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand, the first batch of 120 Chinese tourists is now expected to arrive in Phuket by the end of the month. They’ve paid for their holidays in advanced, but will not receive refunds because their trips have only been delayed, not cancelled!

A case of “too many cooks”, methinks!

Saturday, 10th October.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is going to liase with the Foreign Ministry, to speed-up up the issue of “certificates of eligibility” to would-be foreign tourists.

The first batch of Chinese tourists, which was scheduled to arrive in Phuket in early October, has been delayed until the 26th. The new first batch should arrive in Bangkok on the 20th October.

A batch of tourists from Scandinavia should arrive on the 1st November, but it includes people from what is now higher-risk Denmark. TAT is going to propose to the FM that eligibility should be based on the infection status of individual cities, not whole countries, to overcome this problem.

The Tourism and Sports minister has proposed that tourists should be confined to their hotel rooms for the first seven days of their quarantine period, and then allowed access to the whole hotel area for the remaining seven days.

If all of the first three batches of foreigners remain symptom-free by the 17th November, consideration will be given to the reduction of the quarantine period to ten days.

The Director-general of the Health Service Support Department of the Ministry of Public Health has proposed a new type of 14-day quarantine period for short-term visitors. They will not be restricted to their hotels, but must:

1. Be from low infection risk countries.

2. Be from areas with no local infections for three months.

3. Book flights and accommodation through travel agents.

4. Self-quarantine for 14 days before travelling.

5. Test negative for the virus during the 72 hours prior to departure.

6. Travel only to designated areas in the tourist provinces ready to open, like Buri Ram, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Chon Buri, Phuket, Rayong and Surat Thani.

7. Use designated travel routes only.

8. Use tracking devices.

9. Be accompanied by representatives of agencies responding to Covid-19.

Allowed activities will include gastronomic tours, massages and spas.

There are 2,000 hospital rooms and 13,009 hotel rooms ready to accommodate foreign visitors on leisure and business trips.

Yeah virgin are pushing the Caribbean, and U.S They quoted me a resort in the Maldives but are £500+ dearer than tui and it's 13 nights in the same resort & same flights, basis, room, transfers)(Tui quote for 14 nights in resort & still came in £500 cheaper).

The Maldives also require pcr (as do the flights) which adds £149pp pre departure and all subject to change anyways

(It could work out cheaper to fly from London and do the in airport test, than departing Manchester as things stand)

Maldives is on my very short potential destination list though

The health authorities have still not discovered how a French-Thai woman was found to be infected with the virus after spending 14 days in a Samut Prakan “alternative state quarantine” hotel. They are also looking into the infection of two men at the same hotel.

Evidently, restrictions in alternative state quarantine hotels are not so severe as those applied in state quarantine facilities. People hosted by the state are only allowed out of their rooms to take virus tests. But people in hotels are allowed to spend 45 minutes per day in the open air during the second week of their quarantine periods.

In about a month’s time, the foreign tourists and crews on private yachts will be able to apply for special 90-day tourist visas. They will have to live aboard for the 14-day quarantine period, and must buy health insurance to cover virus treatment costs of at least $100,000. A much better proposition than the hugely expensive package tour scheme which started last week.

Waiting for the thai embassy page to update for confirmation but you stay in your hotel (if it's approved as an alternative state quarantine location) until your pcr test from arrival comes back as clear, then you holiday as normal.

Theres a list online of approved hotels with asq (alternative state quarantine) status.

They are standard hotels predominantly in Bangkok and I've not heard anyone say the hotel are charging more or any form of quarantine payment.

I guess you'll have to pay their meal prices as you are grounded on arrival.

I think the hotel we've booked into in Bangkok is now asq but the area we are supposed to travel to after that isn't listed online. I've no interest in spending 2 whole weeks in Bangkok though so Thailand may go onto Christmas 2021.

I think the starting prices are roughly around the 40,000 baht mark for the 2 weeks quarantine, then + another 40,000 if your partner is sharing the same room.

It looks like we might as well write 2021 off in regard to holidaying in Thailand. It's such a shame, we need our Phuket fix

All we can say is, don't give up on it. We have been 4 times now and it's always the perfect holiday experience. Once you go, you will keep on going.

Like yourselves, we love swinging in GC, but Thailand is something special.

More covid cases being reported and now we have 2 more deaths I can see another full lockdown coming already reporting that songkran is cancelled not looking good radio reports that we might have already experienced covid last year in January with people reporting a strange flu like virus while we still had thousand of Chinese tourists still coming in

Stay safe everyone

That's terrible news, from a selfish point if view it's devastating as we were so looking forward to our holiday.

Hope you both stay safe and enjoy yourselves as much as you can.

Id be very careful booking anything the Thai govt take a long view its a risk to book for 2021 as who knows what restrictions will still be in place.

Im hopeful of getting back this year but I can't really see it to be honest

I think realistically if you're not prepared to do 2 week quarantine on arrival in Thailand that the first half of 2021 is very unlikely.

If the vaccines are rolled out and offered to every adult before autumn, maybe, other countries will open their borders to us but I'm guessing.

I’m looking to get my eyes done in Bumrungrad hospital as soon as possible. Had knee surgery there back in 2007 and it’s an awesome hospital. The sooner it’s all open for medical tourists the better. Besides that I need my spiritual side recharged and there’s no better place.

Nice thread btw...

Not that it will break the bank, but Thailand is bringing in the 300 bhat tourist fee per visit to cover uninsured tourist hospital fees. A massive 34 bhat out of the 300 going to a insurance fund.

That will pay for a elastoplas eh

yeah seen it being slid in for a few months just read the article and it's being proposed....... Lol again.

this "tax" or as I like to see it greasing the govts slimey paws has been going around for yrs it will defiantly happen at some point but I think right now with visa insurance policy it would be a crazy move (I know its a tiny amount per head but add the visitors up its a fair bit of change for absolutely nothing as for a visa right now you must have big insurance) once covid dies down and the populace is appeased it will slide through in one guise or another (they are also proposing you get a tourist sim that is track able)

We’ve also been on the losing end of hotel deposits in Thailand. Even the travel insurance we had couldn’t recover our money because of the franchise or non franchise thing. Very frustrating.

Phuket chamber of commerce and a lot of hoteliers are trying to vaccinate the island via private funding.

The aim is to give phuket herd immunity and to open up to tourists who have had the vaccine by the 1st of October without the need to quarantine.

Just to obstacles 1 they need government approval and 2 a supply of vaccine.

A good few years ago there was a 500 baht pay on atrrival entry fee into Thailand which the Thai Government then incorporated into air fares, the new 300 Baht entry tax is nothing new but if only 10 percent of the fee is for "insurance" there's a lot removed for Thai "administration" charges......

I believe your thinking when you paid for a visa a bit like you do with Turkey (although I think they have changed to online visa charging now) the "tax" thing has been banded about for years but never implemented.

The scarey addition this time round though is they want you to also have a trackable sim

Many years ago you used to pay 500bt departure tax it was stoped and put on the flight ticket price if I remember. This new 300bt is for insurance but as most sensible people have that all ready it just the usual thai ripping off the tourist as usual.
