you are right first you need what destination you looking at and a cruise line within your budget, Best book through a good travel firm as they give you a better price that directly from the Cruise Line Themselves |

You need to think what onboard experience you prefer.
If you like very formal, casual or somewhere inbetween, your budget, if you prefer British food or more Mediterranean style.
We cruise a lot on MSC but the Mediterranean food, mixed nationalities and announcements in several languages isn't for everyone but they are good value for money and they are not strict on dress code if you don't like getting suited and booted. Costa is similar but I haven't been really impressed n the ones we have done with them.
I have never cruised P&O but understand it's a very British menu onboard.
We also enjoy Royal Caribbean and Celebrity but they do cost more.
We haven't done any of the others like Virgin, Norwegian, Princess etc so can't comment.
We tend to look at itineraries and then find a cruise that fits our budget.

We are first time cruisers next year. Decided to go with RC. Have heard lots of good and bad about all cruise lines.
But most that go love them so fingers crossed |

Best value for money is probably MSC, best for service probably Marella, best all round maybe Princess. You could do a week long Northern Europe 8 day taster cruise with MSC for two, including premium drinks package, for around £1200, would be a good way to see if you like cruising. |
