Heading over from the UK on the 14th January till end of January and looking for some tips to maximise the experience.
Bringing Euros with me and then a few dollars for tips. Will be going to Havana, Trinidad, Vinalles and then spending 6 nights at Santa Maria.
Are there any dos and don’ts? (Apart from don’t criticise the government)…

"Watch out when your out in Havana for someone coming up to you saying they work at your hotel ,they don't they have seen your wrist band, hide it. "
Good advice. Thankyou. Is it just hotels you get a wristband as I’m staying in casa’s until I get to Santa Maria. |

I've spent 3 weeks or so there. It's wonderful. I saw Havana, Varradero and the town by the USA base there, Guantanamo. Get to know the locals, you may be invited back to homes, for dinner etc. Take people out too, as you will have more money than they have. |

"Beaches are brilliant"
Oooo good. I’m looking forward to seeing the sites, exploring the lavish countryside, learning salsa and then relaxing on a beach for 6 nights at the end so im glad the beaches are brilliant. 
I have got my head around the currency but not the internet yet. Is it a case of switching off your mobile for the entire stay? |

Wow, you got to see Guantanamo… (you already prefixed it by saying the town but that’s still cool.)
I’m trying to brush up on my Spanish which hopefully will be enough to get by but do people speak English aswell? Have read conflicting info on the internet? |

Two different currency’s one for the locals one for the tourist. Locals get everything cheaper. Internet you buy airtime on a card controlled by the government. Take the collective taxis. They work out cheaper than anything. Stay at home stays, can book them on hostel world. It’s a fantastic country. Backpacked it from west to east over 5 weeks. Absolutely loved it |

Am now here in Cuba and they have scrapped the tourist currency and only have the peso. However they are experiencing 3000% inflation and rations for only 3 days out of a month so have to get 80,000 pesos a month to survive and the average wage is only 4-8,000 pesos a month so desperately rely on the euros and dollars to survive as 95% of their economy is driven now by the black market. 
I agree it’s a gorgeous country but so sad that they have everything the world wants… tobacco, coffee, sugar but the money goes into the hands of the army rather than the people. Che Guevara would have a heart attack if he was alive to see how the the people are suffering. |
