Going to Cap d agde campsite in july . Any idias how to get there from manchester .gona take our caravan .. need a bit of help what is the easiest way to get there .. thank u

We took our caravan to Cap D last September via Calais. Went the east route around and stayed at a lovely small site at Savigny Les Beaune en-route. Great to look around Beaune and try the wines.

Then stayed in the Ardeche for a friend's wedding and then onto Agde. Came back via quiet site near Clermont Ferrand, then Orleans and Rouen.

The autoroutes aren't cheap but if you are going directly to Agde, then they are the best. Rarely busy and some are free.

Where you stay en-route depends on number of hours you want to drive in a day. We reckon 300/350 miles a day max but on autoroutes, you can average 55/60mph.

Autoroute speed limits for car/caravans are complicated and depend on many things. Have a look at www.caravancl...ed%20limits.pdf.

We have a newish powerful car and modern caravan with latest anti snake devices etc but even then, will rarely drive at more than 70mph without feeling very unsafe. Crosswinds can be a bugger on the Autoroutes so we cruise comfortably at 60/65mph.

FYI, we stayed at Oltra naturist site in Cap D which is perfect for walking to the "fun" areas!!

We have done it twice and on both occasions the worst part of the trip was getting from Manchester to Dover. Really envy those who live in the SE and have got that gateway to Europe right on your doorstep.

We have made a decision never to drive again. We came back for Xmas driving solo had 2 stops Bourges central France & Calais to get some shopping on before getting the ferry. Coming back stayed at Calais again, then Clermont then to Agde. Taking into account fuel, hotels, meals, ferry, road tolls it was more expensive than flying. We have found a cheap car hire site for UK rentals so that's what we intend to do. The above costs worked out 570€ flying would have cost 230€. Hard to believe but when you cost it out its a surprise. If you add breakdown insurance, wear & tear on the car, then it's not an option from our point of view. Hope this helps.

How much is it to cross the channel in the peak season?. My preference is Ryan Air to Bezier. Hopefully you can save a little time on your journey by taking the toll road around Birmingham. Traffic in Cap d Agde can be very heavy on Saturdays during the peak season. You might be able to save a little. time at the entry gate by buying your passes in advance .

At xmas Calais to Dover was only £37, but coming back 27/12 was £75! Think in summer your looking at at least £75 each way? That's just a car & up to 5ppl.

Its a great drive solo, lots to see and you can detour and see pretty towns - but you need time, the trip could take a week as so much to see! But towing is a different matter. The first part is ok in France, but if you go Paris route the road can be a nightmare! Depending which route sat nav takes you, there is a height restriction a caravan won't get thru. Better stay easterly direction on peripherique. Then easy drive till past Clermont then you hit the mountains - long slow drags then down into the coastal plain to cap. On arrival you have to park your outfit and buy a ticket to get into the quarter. In peak parking is a nightmare with a car, but car & van is even worse so if you find a big space pull over and walk to the office. Towing I would allow 3 days each way. This is a personal opinion, and just to give you an insight for planning the route. Safe journey.

. Just checked the tunnel. Cheapest fare mid week is seventy pounds each way and no changes in date .

We are from Dover, cant get much closer to France, used to work for P&O

I drive for a living, so the last thing I want to do is drive down there plus its so much cheaper to fly, first two week in September this year for us,

Have done this route a number of times ,with a motorhome,towing a caravan and solo.

Get the Ferry from Newheaven to dieppe,book early £75 with a cabin £39 without cabin.

Ferry departs 2300hrs get 4 hours sleep arrive dieppe 0500 hrs.

Drive down using the route below(fastest route minimum tolls) Arrive at Cap d'agde about 1400hrs(driving solo) .

Leaving a caravan in gardiennage(French storage) about £200 a year, they will deliver it to the pitch you have booked on the campsite.

leave your car at Beziers Airport for about £40/month

Fly back and fore as many time you can in the season ,at end of season drive car home,returning dieppe-Newheaven, leaving caravan in gardiennage .

This is the most economical way we have found to stay in Cap d'agde.

Hope this information help those that are thinking of Driving Down to the Cap.

Please make sure that ur UK insurers are aware of the van being in storage in France. Also, be aware of the insurers requirements - hitch lock, wheel clamp etc. Gardienage don't want these "hassles" so be aware. Storage in France is very reasonable, but if its in France for mire than 6 months, it needs to be registered in France - a legal requirement & that's a whole new mine field from experience!

Yes this is true my caravan has been in France for 2 years now without a problem, if they say anything I will just bring it home and take it back.insurance is a must make sure they know its staying in France mine only charged me £124 knowing it stays in France.

The UK is completely different to the rest of Europe with regard to insurance. A UK caravan insurance only covers liability whilst the van is not in tow! The vehicle insurance covers the vehicle whilst in tow. A UK caravan insurance policy has NO road risk cover. In Europe a caravan has its own log book. The insurance covers whilst in tow & whilst parked unlike UK cover. In France the tow vehicle & the caravan have to be insured with the same company. It is technically illegal for a French vehicle to tow a UK van. If the van has a UK insurance policy, you will not have any cover on your van if the gardienage tows it. It will only really matter in the event of an accident their policy will not pick up any liability. Ad said, you will get away with it unless there is an accident.
