We’re told the new variant is spreading faster but what does that really mean, Ie In what context should we understand velocity?

If it required 15mins exposure before is it now 10mins?

If the incubation period was 5 days is it now 2?

If we were moderately safe at 2m separation is it now 3m?

I was watching a news source last night which showed evidence that people had caught it after one minute close contact and from 6 metres away. I can't remember the source because we watch several

I don't think anyone knows the answers yet. We think it is more virrulent because of the number of people that are catching this mutation as far as i am aware no one knows why yet.

Quite. Apparently the Germans say they can not see why the U.K. claim it is more transmissible as they haven't found that from their studies.

It could be down to human behaviour rather than any thing in the mutation. We still don't know for certain why the spanish mutation flared up, human behaviours seem to have got the blame. My feeling is that is a combination of virus and human behaviour.

Possibly also down to schools and the fact that the governments ‘covid safe’ measures aren’t that at all but of course that won’t ever be heard so it’s just ‘more transmissible than we thought’

It does beg the question given the cases are rising in the tier 2 areas next to tier 4 when the decision will be taken to put all in the latter..

If it is as bad as they are making out...you would think its inevitable we are going into a while lockdown.

So surely they should be making announcements now one when it will be to give us all some clarity.

That’s my thinking, a halt to NYE socialising. Whether it will be the whole country is the unknown, but I’m thinking anything that borders T4 or whose numbers have had a swift incline this last week will be included.

It seems to be common knowledge the virus mutates regularly and many countries have admitted to having this new mutation which the UK has, so why the border closing for the freight at Dover? .... Maybe it's the drivers that are spreading it which is why it is getting around so fast

The rise in London and parts of the south east was in the lockdown we all had so once that lifted and they were tier two it's entirely likely that it was being spread countrywide..

During the first lockdown the store i work in limited customers to 100 at a time, then when 100 was reached we worked one out one in; if their was a queue then there was a queue (to quote the merecat ) simples !!

Now it is a free for all, and when you ask management it is 'so people don't have to queue in the cold and wet'

I don't work in a food retailer and most of the stuff we sell is far from essential so this new strain if it is more communicable is going to spread if all companies are adopting this attitude.

Staff have to work in this environment and so no doubt the spread is inevitable !

Central

We don't know too much about this variant, it just may be super-effective at invading cells, potentially needing a lower level of virus to gain an effective infection.

The virus is monitored globally for the specific variants and mutations, with Germany particularly well placed to identify the activity and virus progression there, including via outstanding university hospitals and labs.

I think there was probably a little greater emphasis on how terrible this new variant was, to help to justify the emergency measures that the hare-brained 1 needed to take after parliament had shut up shop for the holidays.

Every piece of scientific data should be made freely available so scientists can learn from each other.

They could put all the data on to a block chain and get artificial intelligence to scan the data to find inconsistencies and patterns.

At the risk of being pedantic virulence is not the same as velocity

Velocity is the speed of something in a given direction usually measured in SI units of meters per second

Transmissible speed in a given population is something different....

"We’re told the new variant is spreading faster but what does that really mean, Ie In what context should we understand velocity?

If it required 15mins exposure before is it now 10mins?

If the incubation period was 5 days is it now 2?

If we were moderately safe at 2m separation is it now 3m?

At the risk of being pedantic virulence is not the same as velocity

Velocity is the speed of something in a given direction usually measured in SI units of meters per second

Transmissible speed in a given population is something different....

"

As a definition that’s correct

But doesn’t it show that now, and perhaps always, the government have chosen slightly misleading terminology to convey their message?

I watched the briefings from the devolved administrations yesterday and the message from all was certainly velocity....it’s heading our way, it’s coming to get you etc etc....
