Hey how many fellow fabbers will be in Tenby this weekend for the return of Ironman Wales? Competing or supporting?

WFH?

Or what about all the money it brings into the area for the whole week?

Wales/ All over UK

I’ll be staying well clear, the South of the county is a nightmare during Ironman and Long course weekends.

I appreciate that it brings a lot of interest and income to the area, but it also impacts a lot of locals negatively

Great for the hotel, holiday let and B&B owners I guess. Not so great if you've got a proper job and work you can't get on with. Not that great for the local cafes who always make less money on Ironman weekends because their bread and butter customers and day trippers give the town a miss.

Definitely a double edged sword.

Personally I give the south of the county a wide birth most of the summer due to the crowds.

You can’t beat a deserted beach when the visitors have all gone home.

Love it, a great event that does good for the county all year around.

We were there. What about that swim!

Great event with fantastic support.

Appreciate it's not for everyone and the disruption the closed roads cause, but it's for a few hours on a Sunday. Not sure it can be minimised any less and judging by the numbers in Tenby at the weekend (& the rates for accomm) I am sure it brings a lot of money into the area.

West Wales and Cardiff

I’m a big fan of it, and travel down every year to watch it.

It definitely brings a lot of money in. That said, Tenby’s accommodation would be very booked up on a weekend in September anyway. It’s a very popular month for weekend visits.

Also, it does cause a lot of disruption, and there are genuine human stories. It costs the economy as well as benefits - I know someone who runs a garden centre down there who has no option but to close. Doing that on a Sunday is a big financial loss for him and his staff.

Also, in 2019, a family friend was celebrating her 100th birthday on the day of it. She lived right on the run/bike course and it severely impacted what should have been a special day. Virtually no-one could visit.

As I said, I love it and hope it continues. A bit more acknowledgement of the human and economic downsides would be good though.
