Historical messages

Does anyone know if their is a limit or time period when messages disappear? I've had chats in which I've been speaking to a person or persons over the course of 3-4 weeks but in the chat history, it only shows the last 2 weeks?

Think it's down to being active on the site because I took a 10 week break and boom lost loads

I've not had a gap in between logging on but historical messages have gone from someone who I've spoken with for some time.
