If the VPN is free, how are they getting the finance to support the app? All your Internet data will be passing through their servers, so you'd have to presume that they're monetising it somehow?

You should then see the block page your provider is showing.
The reason you get an error is because fab by default is https and the mobile network can't show you an error page.
Then you have 2 choices get the block turned off by your provider or use a vpn everyone you want to connect outside of home/wifi
Try protonvpn or just look in the google play store or app store |

The free ones are generally written by enthusiasts who do it for various non-monetary reasons.
The best of these are generally on anonymous distributed networks which makes it impossible for any agency to intercept data. |

I don't think it's anything quite as sinister as that, I just get adverts that the pop up once every few days,
I'm no more about it then I am my Google home listening to Eeverything I Do I really don't have anything unlawful to hide so it doesn't worry me too much. |
