It is a major surprise to me how many people cannot spell the simplest of words, all this text talk and typing has made us all lazy, the one that bugs me most is 'prolly' the word is probably .

"Accuracy in spelling reflects accuracy in thought".

Creative spelling, sometimes called 'ebonomics' makes both reading and communication difficult. Communication is often difficult under the best of circumstances, and poor spelling compounds the problem. In modern times however, it is often seen as cool to spell and communicate either phonetically or using massive abbreviation - conveying a 'spelling for the people, by the people' message.

Language is such a beautiful thing, i hate seeing it bastardised.

Anyone can make a typo though...!

haha i do! they annoy me quite a bit and others think i'm sad for even noticing lol

i use shorthand words now and again (i get lazy), but mostly just type words as they are. it doesn't take long and it's not exactly rocket science....it is the internet after all...

in particular, it bugs me when i see these words used in the wrong context lol they're similar in sound, but does it really take much to know which means which?:

to, too, two.....

where, were, wear....

off, of

there, their, they're....

hmmm. can you tell i'm a bit of a geek?

I do not particularly like text typing and not everyone is expert at spelling so I would forgive that.

And after all we all have our faults and if it happens to be a lack of spelling skills then who are we to judge.

And I dont use spell checker if it's wrong it's wrong.

I hate when people pick up on spelling mistakes.

People have to remember that not everyone in the world can spell properly; that people who are dyslexic or have other difficulties may be on here and not wanting attention drawn to not being able to spell things properly; and that mistakes do happen to the best of us!

If you know what the other person meant, then whats the problem?

I don't think there is any implied criticism of people who have dyslexia or learnig difficulties, more an impatience with those who simply can't or won't make an effort.

If you were going to meet someone, presumably you would have a bath, get dressed up etc to make a good impression - why not do the same when speaking to people, it doesnt take much effort and it makes a big difference.

The odd spelling mistake or typo we can all live with. It's the profiles or messages that you really have to concentrate on because the spelling or structure looks akin to that of a 6 year old that put me off. Maybe I'm being a bit of a snob but I prefer to chat to people who can string two words together! haha!

And don't get me started on the word 'yous' and the plural of 'you'......

It's not about being perfect or anything like that. Some people could get the wrong end of any thread (neatly inserted internet forum gag...).

In any walk of life, in any activity, give me someone who makes an effort and makes mistakes over someone who just doesnt bother to even try. Every time.

Do yous know what i mean?

Was a cambridge study done, where you can bloomin well write a word with the correct letters with the first and last letter in place in the word but jumble up the letters in the middle.

This threads not a pop at dyslexic folks its about the "canny be arsed spelling it" attitude that exists.

Anyhoo, lets try this cambridge theory, lol.

"as long as you understand whats being said.everything else doesnt matter.you started this kirsty, proud of yourself. "

Are we saying that we can't discuss language on an open forum for fear of insulting some people ... ?

Dyslexia and learning difficulties aside ... (and often those who are most dyslexic are compensated in some other manner) ... perhaps some people just don't understand where/when certain spelling of words should be employed.

If we are all too afraid to discuss the matter then we may never learn our own faux pas.

I have discovered all sorts of phrases and words and how to spell weird correctly (which is just wired incorrectly) by getting involved in forums.

We are all human and we all make mistakes .... I never intimated people should be judged on their spelling abilities ....

However, if one person sends a one line message akin to

"Hi how r u your pics r horny wud u leik to meet u got msn" ...

It may be received with the same enthusiasm as a cock picture is greeted by others .....

If a post highlights where their/there/they're should be used ... or to, too, two or explains that could of/would of and should of should actually be could've/would've/should've etc etc is it not possible that some people may learn from it?

It was also said people are too judgemental ... this is perhaps judgemental of judgemental people and we should perhaps be more lenient towards their feelings ....

Am I proud of myself ...?

"In general, pride is at the bottom of all great mistakes" - John Ruskin.

I have learnt so much from my misteaks that I am thinking of making some more ....

Just take your time and check messages and profiles. Spelling mistakes can be avoided.

Most spelling mistakes are probably people getting too excited at other profiles and typing a message quickly or one handed :P

Why would you do that? - this thread ask for opinions - and bravo to those honest enough to admit that something as silly as spelling mistakes would annoy them - much the same as people who insist on hoovering twice a day (I can never understand that one)

but why would you feel it necessary to have a personal dig at someone for expressing their opinion - it openly invites personal criticism in return and doesnt make for pleasant reading

relax and enjoy differing opinions
