I haven’t posted here in a while, but I’ve had a story in mind for a long time that I’ve been meaning to post which is loosely based on a mates experience from a number of years back, although I’ve embellished some of the details! – hope you like it!

Our business was going great, for a while it seemed like every deal we did was coming up trumps. But I got carried away – I did one deal too many for too much money, when I had no need to take that level of risk. Maybe I got too greedy, but the deal fell through and we suddenly found ourselves going from having a comfortable life to everything being on the line as the debts piled up.
I sold the car, re-mortgaged the house and sold shares I had elsewhere but things we spiraling out of control and the bank was about to call in its debt – If they did, we’d lose everything, even the house.
Our business was still doing well despite all the debt, and we were about to hit our busiest time of the year - I knew if I could pay the bills and stay afloat for a few months I could turn things around. My wife and I were working every hour we could but it wasn’t enough, we just needed some cash to tide us over the next couple of months and we’d be back on our feet – the bank couldn’t lend us any more as we were already mortgaged up to our necks with them, so reluctantly I took the decision to turn to a local loan shark.
I didn’t know the guys real name, people just called him Sharky – He was a really shady character, whose reputation proceeded him – he was into all sorts of dodgy dealings and was not the kind of person I’d ever normally associate with, but these were desperate times, and I knew he had cash to lend to those desperate enough to ask him.
Much as I hated the idea it was either that or let everything we’d worked so hard for go down the drain. I bit the bullet and made my way to the dodgy pub down town that Sharky owned and asked the bar man where to find him.
After lots of questions which mostly seemed to be trying to establish if I was a policeman, I got to see Sharky in his office out the back of the main bar – he was a bit shorter than I imagined but build like a tank, tightly shaved hair, covered in tattoos. He came across as surly and as hard as his reputation suggested – he wasn’t rude as such, just very direct with an air of menace about him.
Half an hour later and after giving him the guarantee that he’d have his cash back with an extortionate amount of interest in 3 months, I left with £35k in cash wondering what the hell I’d done.
My wife Helen flipped out when she found out I’d gone to him, but she knew in the back of her mind that we were running out of options and reluctantly agreed to go along with the plan – in 3 months time our business would be hitting its busiest time of year and would have more than enough money coming in to pay back the debt and interest.
About 8 weeks later things had slowly begun to turn around, we’d just about managed to keep the business afloat - and while we were going to have a very tight month ahead, for the first time in ages it felt like things were finally starting to turn around.
That was until Friday night came around. My wife and I were chilling on the couch with a bottle of wine before bed when there was a knock at the door at about 11:30pm
…It was Sharky, who had somehow found out where we lived and was stood in our doorway demanding his money. He was accompanied by hired muscle; another huge guy about 6 foot 5 who was casually holding a baseball bat that looks like a kids toy in his huge hand.
“I’ve come to call in my debt” – Sharky said threateningly

I was stood there in shock at the fact Sharky had tracked down my house, and the fact he wanted his money a month early…..in a few weeks paying him wouldn’t have been a problem, but now…..I simply didn’t have the cash.
“But Sharky, I have another month left” I protested in a noticeably shaky voice
“…I’ve decided I can get better return elsewhere” he smirked, “I want my cash back now”
I had no way to pay him.
“I don’t have it now, but give me a few weeks and I’ll have it and all the interest” I said
“can I give you something as collateral in the mean time? how about my watch, its really expensive?” I said more in hope than expectation
“Fuck that” he said “This isn’t cash for gold, I only deal in hard currency”
“I’m not your fucking bank, I don’t do overdrafts and I want my fucking money back now or there’s going to be serious consequences” He said in a menacing tone
…..he didn’t have to spell it out. Sharky had a reputation that meant people knew better than to cross him. Those who did ended up in hospital or worse.
I began to wonder if he ever intended to lend the money for the term or was just laundering it through my company
“Just give me some time” I said, trying to desperately think of a way out of the situation
….he glanced over at my wife “well, maybe we could come to some sort of arrangement” he smirked, as he gazed at my wife who was stood in the living room doorway in her silk kimono
“no fucking way” I said firmly, “leave her out of this, this is between us”
“That’s a fine looking wife you got there buddy …….one night of her time could save you both a shit load of trouble” he said smirking
“Not a fucking chance” I said – “please just give me some time and I’ll get you your money – just leave her out of this and lets sort this out like men” I said trying to be firm
“hahaha have a look at this prick, you gota admire his balls” Sharky said, laughing to his accomplice
“I don’t do gentlemen’s agreements” he replied
“You have until 9pm tomorrow – he barked
"either have the money at my office or bring your wife to ask me very nicely for an extension
- otherwise dont expect to see your next birthday"....

“Oh fuck, we’re screwed!” was all I could say for the next half hour. I had know idea how I was going to come up with that kind of money in less than 24 hours.

We both lay awake all night desperately trying to come up with another plan or some other option to get the money, but by morning we knew we didn’t really have a choice – I reluctantly agreed, trying to buy into my wifes idea of pretending this was a game, rather than the harsh reality – which was me being made a cuck by some local hard man looking to fuck my wife if I didn’t pay him off.

I pushed open the solid mahogany door at the end of the corridor and entered into the back room of Sharkys pub.
