Has anyone done a home test?

Cromer

So I report every day on the covid symptoms checker app and they have started using volunteers to have tests.

I was asked to do one so ordered a home test.

Watched the video and it seems straight forward enough but I was under the impression that you had to swab higher in your nose than indicated.

Has anyone done a home test or been swabbed at a drive in centre?

I was showing symptoms and my doctor got me a home test to do. It's quite uncomfortable, you swab your tonsils for 30 seconds which made me gag a little but then you have to swab your nose and the swab needs to go deep, there's a mark on the swab, you twist it around for 30 seconds and it just feels super uncomfortable. Not painful just a weird feeling.

Yes. I thought it was deeper too.

The doctors I've seen told me I had a false negative

wirral

I’ve done lots of swabs on other people and a couple on myself - the swab should be wiped over the tonsil area on each side of the throat and then up each nostril, about 2.5cm up until you feel slight resistance.

Eeeek did you have symptoms?

A friend of mine went to a drive in centre and said that they went in really far!

That's what it says in the video, 2.5 centimetres.

Maybe those having it done by others just feel like it's gone in further!!

I found the throat swab much more unpleasant that the nose one.

My gag reflex went haywire lol.

Yeah. I've been housebound for nearly eight weeks. It'll probably take months to get my strength back. I was told I had a mild case. Breathing difficulty, fever for a couple of weeks, extreme super weird fatigue, incredible weakness, chest pain. Not much coughing.

So sorry to hear that, hoping you are recovering more every day though

Had both.

Went to a test centre, my gag reflex is terrible and they struggled as it can't touch the tongue and made myself bawk trying to keep my tongue down

Didn't really feel it once it was in my throat, tickles up the nose

I was randomly selected last week for a home screening (no symtoms).

Admit I couldn't do it properly as soon as I moved my tongue down I retched. Managed to get back of throat (just) did nose easy

I've had 3 tests all at drive through stations. First was presumed positive, then had a good then eventually got a negative...3rd time lucky!

Throat bit didn't bother me but thought the nose swab was awful. After the first one I felt awful for an hour or so after x

How do they know it was false?

Because the rates of false negatives are or were high and my symptoms have been consistent.

They don't know for sure but I've had a clinical not laboratory diagnosis (confirmed several times over).
