Anyone see this? Was very satisfying to see a mask zealot like Nana being schooled by a professional.

When a time served professional micro biologist tells you a mask is not designed to stop a virus (it says so on the packaging) but rather it is a splash back item to prevent spittle from the wearer landing on anyone nearby and prevent the wearer from being externally splashed with anything, then, believe the professional not some daffy journalist! PS its online just google it.

This came up my Twitter feed when it was Gbeebies. It's not really a fair fight as she doesn't have the scientific language to a argue against him and also the presenter just back up the anti masker. When asked about why surgeons wear masks he I was to protect surgeons from blood splash and to protect the saliva . The whole point of wearing a mask is to protect others not to protect yourself.

I never understood how people didn’t understand this….who has never got a wet palm or handkerchief from sneezing into it?

That’s exactly what masks were for, to stop you spraying snot and spittle loaded with viral nodes en masse. Plenty will still get though, but orders of magnitude less than without one.

Can’t believe people still don’t get this. Me wearing a mask doesn’t help protect me, it helps to protect you! That is why surgeons wear them in operating theatres!

Why is a microbiologist debating about this?

Covid is a virus not a microorganism.

"Why is a microbiologist debating about this?

A microorganism is an organism of microscopic size. It includes bacteria, viruses and some fungi and parasites.

If people want to wear masks let them ffs

If they don't, leave then the fuck alone

But common sense people, if you're feeling like crap and you're coughing and spluttering, do try and stay home for just a couple of days to get over it

And if you absolutely must go out, would it kill you to wear a mask for the 5 minutes you're in Tesco's (other supermarkets are available)

But the whole "wear a mask all the time just in case you're ill" is a bit 'wear a condom all the time in case you have sex'

No, it's like "wear a condom any time you might transmit a disease." For a condom, that's during sex. For a mask, that's while you're around others.

A single viral microbe won't be stopped by a face mask no, however those viruses don't just leave the body by themselves, they're contained in moisture particles that certainly will be captured mostly by a mask.

There's no need to watch media discussions etc, in order to be informed. Stick with the research evidence. It clearly shows the benefits, primarily to stop the wearer's transmission of the virus as well as offering secondary benefits of reducing the potential of the wearer getting infected too. They have reduced infection levels and mortality. Some people quite like not losing their lives

The wearing of the masks was part of the fear machine that's all,it looked scary to see in a country that didn't wear them publicly,

they don't work and even scientists who said they did say the opposite now.

I can't believe people still believe this what it is.

The lock down parties early on showed that the politicians weren't scared, they were going on the news daily pumping the fear whilst they were partying,50 plus in one party, yet they weren't afraid of catching covid, why???,because they knew fine well it wasn't what they said it was.

Also the ONS stats vs media stats was completely manipulated to pump fear.

Then the revelation lately by Pfizer live on camera in the EU that they never tested for transmission just shows the lies, remember that slogan about getting the vaccine "don't get it for yourself, get it for others",well the Pfizer revelation shows that slogan was complete fake advertisement.

This was all about wealth not health, they use taxpayers money to get the country in debt but make money for themselves via shares they have in pharmaceutical companies.

I didn't say that. The clue is in the word 'crooked'. There were several country leaders who refused to shut down their country for covid. Remember President Magafuli of Tanzania who sent goat, papaya and engine oil samples for PCR testing and got positive test results? "It is the biggest raid on the public purse in history, and the longer they the conservatives are allowed to stay, they will just keep on taking.

Don't delude yourself that Labour etc would have handled anything differently. Convid was a global thing, each crooked gov acted in unison.

To think the party in power, plus their opposition party's, in 165 countries colluded over Covid, and managed to concoct the whole thing in a matter of weeks is beyond utterly ridiculous.

Winston

See my comment above for me answer to that

See the comment I was replying to;

You could look at that both ways.

They all did pretty much act in unison, whether by 'follow the leader' mentality or by the more outlandish 'gather round a large mahogany table at midnight in a secret location spectre-style', the outcome was the same really

When the inventor of the PCR test stated that it cannot test for a live infection, who do you choose to ignore that very important fact?"

Haha, logical fallacies are great fun. I choose to ignore inaccurate quote mining.

Mullis also said HIV doesn't cause AIDS - quite impressive when we can use qPCR to establish U=U. Happy to help.

This looks like copypasta. I'm aware of the many things Mullis said and have been for years. Certain that the first time you'd heard of KM was on some YouTube video an algorithm popped into your feed.

Can you address where the viral nucleic acids come from that are detected in qPCR?

He actually didn't say that at all. It is a misquote from an interview where he stated (in a nutshell) that the test doesn't detect viruses, only proteins... however, the proteins that it is detecting CAN be specific to a virus and consequently proves the presence of that virus in the sample.

"There's no need to watch media discussions etc, in order to be informed. Stick with the research evidence. It clearly shows the benefits, primarily to stop the wearer's transmission of the virus as well as offering secondary benefits of reducing the potential of the wearer getting infected too. They have reduced infection levels and mortality. Some people quite like not losing their lives "
Anthony Fauchi head of the CDC said wear 1 then 2 then upto 4 masks to protect however this was the same "expert" that wrote a book back in the '80's about the 1918 spanish flu and publically stated that MORE deaths were due to the continued wearing of masks than the flu itself !

"If people want to wear masks let them ffs

If they don't, leave then the fuck alone

But common sense people, if you're feeling like crap and you're coughing and spluttering, do try and stay home for just a couple of days to get over it

And if you absolutely must go out, would it kill you to wear a mask for the 5 minutes you're in Tesco's (other supermarkets are available)

But the whole "wear a mask all the time just in case you're ill" is a bit 'wear a condom all the time in case you have sex'

I thought you said if people want to wear a mask let them?

Yeah he hasnt gone against that, hes just saying what he thinks full time mask wearing equates to.

The 2 things hes saying arent mutually exclusive

Yes I agree, not sure what swing dress is getting at "

I doubt many do, seems like it usually gets it's knickers in a twist.

Yeah, this bacterial pneumonia Spanish influenza mask thing is false. Unless you can cite the paper? I won't hold my breath.

they don't work and even scientists who said they did say the opposite now.

Pity you've ignored the facts, with so many words wasted

Pity you have ignored the facts about mask wearing. Please read up on the Spanish Flu of 1918 especially re the false mask wearing propaganda and how it can and did cause bacterial pneumonia.

History repeats itself because people don't check history and liars in power take advantage of this. "

Pity you didn't read this properly and see the pneumonia was prevalent during to people's lungs being damaged by the flu and being more susceptible to it not the masks

The fact that the government clicked the fingers and 90% of people complied is a success for the powers that be,because now if they want to lockdown for other things they know people will comply, maybe pollution lockdowns because apparently pollution went down a good bit during the first lockdown...maybe covid was a smokescreen and the real agenda is climate change, maybe the first lockdown was a trial run for the future battle against climate change...or in other words social control.

Completely off thread, but in the 1980s I (Mr) was in court when Nina Myskow was being sued for libel.

I just don't think any of them could logistically do it.

Winston

The fact you talk about all countries concocting this in weeks shows your naivety.

Does it never cross your mind that this may well have been planned for years?

Social control and wealth for big pharma...and soon big tech.

OK, let's work on the assumption it's been planned for years.

How many years? Put a guesstimate on it.

Winston

You're shifting away from what I said...it doesn't matter how many years, the point was it wasn't weeks.

Your exact words; "Does it never cross your mind that this may well have been planned for years?"

You suggested it may have been planned for years, if that's your suggestion, how many?

You did use the word "may". By that logic, it may not have been a 165 country plan at all, yes?

"Why is a microbiologist debating about this?

Covid is a virus not a microorganism.

A microorganism is an organism of microscopic size. It includes bacteria, viruses and some fungi and parasites."

I wasn't aware there are fungi that are not microorganisms. Besides the above, there are lots of microscopic algae.

"It is the biggest raid on the public purse in history, and the longer they the conservatives are allowed to stay, they will just keep on taking."

Missed me?

For those who have got in a titter regarding the above quote.

Look at your mortgage,

Look at your utilities bill,

Look at your Groceries bill,

Look at your petrol bill,

And personally yourselves you can add to those costs, and trace where those profits go, its not rocket science just use your senses.

If your senses are not alarmed as you pay out your hard earned cash, then in my opinion you care not for others but only yourself. your are the ones who drive this agenda.

What is this agenda?

I do not know, haven't a clue, all I know the poor are getting poorer till there's nothing more to take.

So its your turn the middle classes the eye has turned to you, and your children, I am sorry to say.

You can bicker, swop facts from journals, but the fact is your paying more to live, to breath the simple things that are now under threat, you, me pay more for.

To see others argue for this state of affairs tells me they profit from it in some way.

The divide on this thread is clear for all to see, and until we can find a common ground.

This will just keep on going till none of us as a race of beings have nothing.

This was all about wealth not health, they use taxpayers money to get the country in debt but make money for themselves via shares they have in pharmaceutical companies.

For example, you stated that masks 'don't work'. Ample evidence exists that they do work. They primarily prevent an infected wearer from releasing higher volumes of virus particles. This was their main objective for being worn. As asymptomatic infections have been fairly widespread, this helped to reduce people unknowingly infected, from passing on the virus. Masks had a secondary benefit, of reducing infections that could be caught by the wearers too, even though this wasn't the main reason for their use.

So if all this is true. If the real nefarious conspiracies actually are happening (but possibly concealed behind layers of very silly and laughable conspiracies to undermine any chance of anything being taken remotely seriously) then what are you/people doing about it? Theres a 1 in 5 chance the marble will deflect off the fence that's pretty good odds and a very good reason the wear a mask

The strongest evidence, including those looking at hundreds of thousands of people, indicates that masks are very effective, in the ways detailed.

The following conclusions are from a BMJ systematic review and meta-analysis suggesting that several personal protective and social measures, including handwashing, mask wearing, and physical distancing are associated with reductions in the incidence covid-19.

Globally, there is a significantly stronger evidence basis for wearing masks than not.

So, what you're saying is that EVERY Govt. in the world combined to hoodwink their public?

I didn't say that. The clue is in the word 'crooked'. There were several country leaders who refused to shut down their country for covid. Remember President Magafuli of Tanzania who sent goat, papaya and engine oil samples for PCR testing and got positive test results? He died mysteriously along with a couple of others who didn't toe the line. I'll let you draw your own conclusions. "

I've just dribbled some engine oil on a Covid test, came back negative.

Haven't got a goat. Wish I did, I'd call him Wilf.

Papaya, non in fruit bowl, will a squashed up banana do?

Conclusion drawn up....President Magafuli (isn't that a Spanish holiday resort)is a nutter.

I think to an extent that's silly.

Yes, people will exist who try to game the system. It doesn't mean the system doesn't work.

I'm reminded of a creationist "gotcha" on YouTube years ago, and being smacked down

I also have long term lived experience of the scientific consensus and its role in my life - medicine, engineering, more besides. Keeping me safe and well. (I didn't say "scientists", it's important to note. I also didn't say "politicians" or "health ministries")

I don't always understand the science, but I know the principles of the scientific method.

I hesitate to get involved in this but the evidence that face masks prevent viral spread is all but non-existent. There is a “common sense” argument but this has not been proven my studies (and do we not “follow the science”)?

Ultimately, though, it’s personal choice. But criticising others for not wearing them is not scientifically justified.

Surgeons wear them to protect them from blood splatter from patients, by the way, not to protect patients.

Plenty of data to suggest ( already mentioned on the thread) that they work but this study is one of the best for supporting evidence that they reduce transmission

Thanks. Things have moved on since that paper though:

The UKHSA scientific rationale for mask mandates is based on a review last updated in the summer of 2021 of 28 studies, two of which are trials and the rest studies of abysmal quality. Most are observational, making claims such as an 80 per cent reduction in cases after mask introduction - making masks use a miracle, not a human intervention. If that were the case, SARS-CoV-2 would had been sent packing years ago, and with it, all the other respiratory viruses.

Sure. I suspect we're past that point now. Camps have been formed, and the proof in the pudding will be in the eating.

"If people believe a mask will stop a virus, I've a large thick cardboard box that's a nuclear bomb shelter.

The key here is people don't "believe" they understand what wearing a mask goes.

I understand what a mask does.

Because I understand, I believe.

Winston

Understanding removes the need for "belief".

Belief:

noun

1.

an acceptance that something exists or is true, especially one without proof.

"his belief in extraterrestrial life"

2.

trust, faith, or confidence in (someone or something).

It's an equivocation, in some cases deliberate.

I believe that my family loves me because of (a lifetime of the way they've treated me).

I believe that the scientific method works because (scientific progress since it was widely adopted).

Winston

The fact you talk about all countries concocting this in weeks shows your naivety.

Does it never cross your mind that this may well have been planned for years?

Social control and wealth for big pharma...and soon big tech.

Winston

Haha,I don't believe I mentioned anything about 165 countries.

"Convid was a global thing, each crooked gov acted in unison."

Global. All countries. There are circa 165 countries.

Winston "

You're getting my quotes mixed up with other peoples Winston,I suggest you go back and check as I never mentioned anything about 165 countries.

"So if all this is true. If the real nefarious conspiracies actually are happening (but possibly concealed behind layers of very silly and laughable conspiracies to undermine any chance of anything being taken remotely seriously) then what are you/people doing about it? Shouting on a swinger website isn’t going to achieve much!"

Because the truth will never get out like many other things.

"Thanks.

If that were the case, SARS-CoV-2 would had been sent packing years ago, and with it, all the other respiratory viruses."

I am not sure if you read the study in full- if things have moved on can you point out what is wrong with the conclusions drawn from the study?

The British Medical Journal says surgeons wear masks:

"To prevent bacteria entering the patient. Aerobic bacteria such as Streptococcus species—normal flora of the human nasal cavity—can pass into the bloodstream of the patient as a result of the surgeon sneezing or even breathing."

Absolutely. Google beats doctors every time. It’s why people are Googling their symptoms instead of trying to see their GP or ED. Oh hang on…

Seriously though - like I said, if you want to wear a mask then crack on but don’t preach that your way is right and everyone else is stupid.

If I wanted to know that, I probably wouldn't be asking on here.

The ECDC has a good article discussing why infection rates are higher in China right now.

Cloth masks are useless.

They won't stop airborne droplets emmited by the mask wearer from penetrating them either directly or from leaking from the gaps either side of the mask.

You can better understand by wearing multiple cloth masks at once and breathing through them onto a pair of glasses or a mirror.

Condensation will still occur because masks are useless at preventing the droplets from leaving the area covered the mask.

If people feel more confident wearing a mask thats your perogotive, but at this stage it's of no benefit to anyone and you might even be doing harm to yourself in other ways.

"The wearing of the masks was part of the fear machine that's all,it looked scary to see in a country that didn't wear them publicly,

they don't work and even scientists who said they did say the opposite now.

100%

This was all about wealth not health, they use taxpayers money to get the country in debt but make money for themselves via shares they have in pharmaceutical companies."

Professor Paul Hunter from East Anglia university was on the TV the other day with regards to the wearing of masks. His opinion was that if you are ill or immune suppressed then yes wearing a mask is a good idea in public places and transport. Other than that his opinion was that with the the high proportion of the polulation who are vaccinated it would have minimal impact.
