**VanLife: Misunderstood Freedom?**

It always surprises me how much negativity still surrounds VanLife — especially from within this scene where you'd expect freedom and individuality to be embraced.

Let me be clear: I’m a professional, often paid handsomely to work remotely and solve real business challenges. I could easily live the hotel life (and did for years), but I *choose* to reside in a modern, fully equipped campervan. Fixed double bed, heating, bathroom, cooking facilities, wine fridge, WiFi — I’m definitely not roughing it. And the views? Let’s just say they beat any bland hotel car park or office block skyline.

Every evening, I’m free to choose where I settle — and that’s deeply liberating.

Yet, oddly, some still see "passing through" or living this way as lesser. Maybe it's the stigma of childhood caravan holidays or grimy truck stops. But this isn’t that. This is curated, intentional living — with quality, comfort, and nature at its core.

So here’s a thought:

Would you rather travel miles to meet someone in a crowded city pub, only to return to a stuffy flat with a view of… another flat?

Or… meet in a charming country pub, share stories over a drink, then wake up to mist over rolling hills and the sound of birdsong?

I know which I’d choose.

In fact, I’ve had some of the most meaningful meetups in stunning locations — ones I’ll never forget. I’ll share one soon. Maybe you’ll share one too?

Once I removed the location filter and became open to travelling, everything changed. The opportunities grew — and so did the quality of the connections.

She was a 40-something mum from Glasgow — honest, grounded, and refreshingly real. Life hadn’t handed her many chances to escape or meet new people, but we clicked right away, chatting easily and connecting over shared values and humour. A few good conversations turned into a spontaneous plan. A business trip aligned perfectly, so I hopped on a flight north, curious but with no expectations.

She was even more attractive in person — not just physically, but in her energy. A few drinks later, the evening was over too quickly and I was back on a flight south… but already planning my return. And this time, I came with the campervan.

I stopped by on a Friday night and we hit the road, heading to Loch Lomond. We explored the rugged shoreline, eventually stopping at Firkin Point just north of Luss. Normally I'd be soaking in the scenery… but let’s just say she had other ideas.

The next day, we looped around the loch to the Falls of Falloch — where a bit of impromptu outdoor fun added to the adventure — then onward to Doune Castle for coffee and cake. Our final night was spent near Falkirk, where the boats on the wheel weren’t the only things creaking.

By Sunday afternoon, I was dropping her off with a smile and a full heart. A whirlwind 72 hours, and before I’d even left her street, I was already planning the next visit.

Icy roads can’t come soon enough — and on the way, I’ll pass through many more places. Not all of them will lead to something memorable…

But some might. And those are the ones worth taking the detour for - still quality over quantity & always social before possible play, but who wants to fish in the same pond time and time again.
