Vanishing messages

First post and it’s something boring and techy.

Has anyone seen messages vanish?

We’re terrible at managing our inbox, we had a bunch of unread messages.

Probably not many by some standards but we’ve noticed the number dropping and the odd message disappear.

Knowing they can disappear if somebody blocks you (hopefully no reason for that to have occurred) or if they deactivate / delete their account we’ve always put it down to that.

Last night though, over ten messages vanished. Having specifically remembered one we checked the profile, it’s still active and they’ve not blocked us.

Also seen winks disappear from profiles we’ve winked.

Just curious as to see if anyone else has seen any inbox weirdness (not related to the actual message content )

Thanks and happy fabbing.

Thanks, that’s one of the reasons I covered in the post though.

Are there any other reasons I’ve not covered?

More curious as to how / why they’ve vanished.

It’s literally 50% of the unopened messages and a big coincidence for them to disappear overnight. Some older remain so it’s not time based.

We opened our messages to everyone (and regretted that decision shortly after). The majority of the messages that vanished were from one group of people.

They were there for a week or two after we locked down the messages but have now vanished without us doing anything.

As far as I'm aware, messages only vanish when they leave the site, or after a certain amount of time. If you get blocked, or block someone, the messages still stay unless you delete them x

My messages all disappeared in 'new' mailbox, but when I switched back to 'old' mailbow they were there as individual messages... Odd

Thanks for the tip, tried that and they don’t appear again.

Mostly it was all the single male messages that disappeared.

Unread messages get scrubbed after a certain amount of time. I left 1 for around a week and it removed itself. Winks left sat there last a few months before disappearing.

I’ve had this. I think it was someone left/blocked me but there was like 7 grouped unread messages from them rather than just one.

Maybe I’m wrong.

Male of the couple here, who is an tech geek.

These were all singular messages from like ten people.

I work in IT so I know glitches happen.

As they were all from single men and we closed our message filters I wondered I if perhaps that was the reason but it occurred a week or so after and they didn’t appear when I tested opening the filters up again.

This is way to boring and techy, but my inquisitive mind likes to understand these things. May report it to admin to see what they say.

Wow, that’s kind of a problem.

Hopefully you didn’t lose anything you needed

O o O oo

https://www.fabswingers.com/articles/FAQ#messages_missing

I've not logged on for a while and now most of my messages have been deleted / I have loads of messages in my inbox and some of the older ones have gone missing

Fab is a super busy site. Hundreds of thousands of private mails are sent every day and we have tens of millions of such messages on our system. Because we do this mostly for free, we can't keep all the messages for ever because our costs would go up and up and the site would get slower and slower. Older messages that have already been read in "dormant" accounts that haven't been logged into for a while are removed from the system. Similarly if you have loads of mails in your inbox, the system will periodically remove some of the oldest.

If some mails are important to you and you want to make sure they're not deleted, become a site supporter and save any important mails to your "saved message folder" (look for "save it" on the bottom of messages you receive) and we'll keep those mails on the system (unless we screw things up and they get deleted too; but we'll try not to!).

I know there were a few unread which was annoying and a couple we hadn't responded to yet. One in particular, but I can't remember who it was from. Was a little bit "oh bother" at the time.

Definitely raise it with admin, they can’t fix these things unless they are made aware.
