Would people welcome being able to turn this feature on or off as part of posting a thread or commenting?

Sometimes you can put up a forum post and then your inbox is flooded with unwelcome messages. It’s be nice to be able to stop this without turning on the filters and blocking everyone.

a village near Haywards Heath in East Sussex

I can't see any benefit from the "reply privately " option . It is meant to be a forum so all responses should be visible.
