I'll have a wild stab at it - on the "read messages" page, there is no second or third page. Older messages are there, you can see them if you delete a few newer ones. It's what you get if you are lax at deleting messages once you've read them

Thinking about it, there have been occasions where I've sent a message to a friend and it has remained unread. If they receive a lot of messages and aren't on site for a day or two, mine could be pushed off the page and they wouldn't even know it was there, or be able to know it's there.

So this kinda does need fixing. But the messages page needs a revamp anyway, the current design makes handling lots of messages very time consuming. There have been a few threads with ideas for that already.
