There are lots for sale especially this time of year. Try a local caravan storage company . There are web sites one like g tree . Le bon coin dot fr .

We bought ours here this season and sold the other on .

You need to be in Cap D'agde or Agde

a flight is cheap so do some homework and spend a day or so . I'll have a look around the campsite and message you.

As mentioned above places where you can buy are plentiful. I would like to offer some advice on the legal aspects:

1. English caravans - they can be insured with specialist companies who will cover 365 day European cover - not all companies will. However, this conflicts with French Law - any imported vehicle into France over 6 Months must be registered in France. This is another complex set of requirements. However, an English insurance policy only covers the caravan when it is on the pitch or in storage and subject to certain security requirements. I have spoken to my French Insurance Broker who has informed me that a caravan is not covered by the tow car insurance as in the UK. He also said he didn't think the Gardienage commercial policy would cover it either - as only the UK don't have Log Books - the rest of Europe have. Unsure about Ireland. Also after brexit they may well require Carnets for caravans from the UK - who knows?

2. French caravan is easier - its already registered. Caravans are like cars here - they have a log book or Carte Grise. You are required to register the caravan in your name and I am uncertain it they will accept an English address or if Oltra will let you use theirs? Your Insurance should be Displayed in the front window (RHS) as similar for a car.

3. Public Liability insurance is a legal requirement here in France. Holiday insurance will have some cover, but don't rely on this if say your caravan catches fire and takes out a couple of others at the same time. The golden rule about insurance is:

"every company who has a risk will try and get out of paying a claim if they can, if they can't they will do their best to pay as little as they legally can" - based on 25 years working in the industry!

Yes I know it's boring, and if you don't have to follow the rules all the time - no one will know - until you have a claim. You pays your money you takes your chance, or better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it!

There are a lot of British Caravans in storage in cap ,We took 1 over 5years ago still there, Towergate was the only company that We could find that would insure a British Van stored in France for 365 days.

same company we used when we first started. Have you read your policy? Particulary sections on security and also regarding fit for purpose - gas checks/servicing! Often companies insist on annual servicing and gas testing - all in policy wording. For example should a claim arise as a result of lack of servicing they will not pay out on grounds of the owner not being responsible - especially gas and various regulations around gas -e.g. age of gas piping from the bottle to the van.

Our new van is serviced every year and security is always fitted Inc tracker, but if you have an older van then it shouldn't cost much for a gas check every year.

then you have nothing to worry about! However have you complied with French law? If it is permanently left in France it should be French registered?

probably nil, but just because lots of other people chose to break the law doesn't mean it's right. How would you feel if lots of foreigners came to the UK and didn't follow the rules? You are more compliant than most by having your van serviced annually - the responsible thing to do, but a lot don't and are an accident waiting to happen. For example tyres have to be changed every 5 years. Gas tubing also every 5 years. It is probably only going to come to light in the event of a claim - and especially if someone is hurt or property damaged. What I tried to highlight was it's not just buying a caravan, but the responsibility to not only yourself but to others. As said it's ok until something goes wrong!

I can now confirm that a British caravan which is insured by a British insurance company is Not insured when being towed by a French vehicle. Storage company have a commercial insurance policy but that doesn't include road cover. The vehicles in the business are insured separately and that policy has limited towing cover for small trailers. The company whom I use was unaware that British caravan insurance didn't cover the vehicle whilst in tow. Axa was the company whom provided this information.

So you are saying the caravan owners are not insured and the tow company as well ?

Sounds like having a caravan here is a no go then because a service cost out weigh the savings to be made and the gardienage company's towing vans are not insured . Tires only last 5 years.rats might eat the seats . The site is full of mozzies so watch out you will be eaten alive .

We'll all have to rent an appartment.

I wonder who rents them ?

I assume that the key point is that an insurance contract is one of utmost good faith ( including full disclosure of all material facts ) . On a simplistic basis for an insurance contract to be valid you would need to comply with all relevant legislation . ( ignorance of the law is no defence for failure to comply ) .

Any investor in an Insurance Company ( whether held directly or via a pension fund ) would only expect claims to be paid out where the claimant was fully compliant with all relevant legislation .

It may seem boring but I usually check the small print on any insurance contract which I have in place . Spending some time reading the small print is preferable to the risk of bankruptcy ( and the loss of a professional qualification ) should there be a material claim .

If you have a British caravan and are insured by a British company that's exactly what I am saying. Why not ask your insurance company! Your utilising your caravan in France but it doesn't mean that the rules are the same. Caravans in the EU are registered like cars. They have the same covers in place as a UK car green card etc.

further to the reference of apartment rentals - yes we do rent apartments - legally and fully compliant -but don't rely on Brits. Out of 83 rentals only 8 were British! The information provided was just to highlight The responsibility of owning a caravan and it's legal implications. Also with regards to a previous remark about importing a vehicle being a stupid French rule - the same rule applies in the UK and the British police are seizing foreign vehicles who don't comply.

The original post was asking if a caravan was for sale. Simple as that.

I'm sure most people can arrange insurance or decide to use a fully insured towing service.

You post negative comments regularly e. g. Bites in campsite . When was your last stay in the site ? Second thoughts don't bother replying . I have a life .

May & June & August to be precise. Warning people to bring insect repellent isn't negative but a fact of nature - creatures live in these places and bite! The post was about buying a caravan but my comments were about the consequences and responsibilities of buying a caravan. Buying a van is easy but be aware of what potential pitfalls there are. Simple as that! I only post on basis of experience - hopefully it will help people from making the same mistakes! End of story.

If we were to take the comment about most people being able to arrange insurance themselves and use a fully insured towing service to its logical conclusion , no one would many posts on these forums as you can google most information .

Where members have a specialist knowledge of a particular area , it assists if they share this information with other members and in addition makes the forums more interesting .

I had an interesting discussion at a soiree evening about vehicle weights and how the move towards lighter vehicles with make it more difficult to comply with the legal rules concerning towing of vehicles in future .
