Hi, this is really aimed at admin and designers.
Is it possible to add a feature to hide distance in privacy settings?
... Or is this already available and I've missed it.
Currently having issues which has meant I've had to hide my profile.
Being able to hide absolute distance while still allowing me to appear in searches would largely solve the problem.
I'm guessing if I'm having this issue others may well be too.
Fabguys could benefit from this addition as well |

Searches require a distance setting though. Without a given location it wouldnt be possible to appear in one.
If youre having issues with someone local there's always the block button. |

The block button has been used but it hasn't solved the problem.
I have blocked this person several times (and in one instance reported them for threatening behaviour - that profile was removed shortly after) but they are still able to register a new profile.
My understanding is, postcode area is used to determine rough distance in search listings, (ie within 5 miles, 10 miles etc) but this is not displayed.
Thus when one gives a named location one can be deliberately vague if this is all the information that is publicly available.
If a member can determine a closer location as happened to me the other night, this defeats the objective of giving that vague location.
Atm the ability to discover a more accurate distance is a premium feature but it's debatable whether it's necessary at all.
(Admin are you listening)?
In addition I would like to be able to hide whether I am using home Internet or mobile. This information also seems to have little useful value
In most peoples case these days it will be mobile though and it is possible to determine a closer location from this.
Whether from GPS or cell tower information I don't know.
I and I suspect many other members would welcome the ability to block proximity and device information from being available.
Many in this community travel, whether for work or otherwise; in my case lifestyle.
Many people would rather keep their exact whereabouts private on a site like this. At the moment we can't do this.
This is not obvious until it becomes a problem.
I live on a boat and moor in identifiable locations as would (say) a lorry driver using lorry parks.
If someone I wish to meet needs to know my exact location I will tell them. I don't want my precise proximity information publicly available.

Only the first part of a postcode is input in your account settings, not the full postcode. You can choose to input whatever you wish, so maybe use a neighbouring one if you want to hide your actual location more.
And if you go to the 'who's near me' button on the mobile site you can turn that off. That way you won't appear on anyone's 'who's near me' list and it will only show a vague distance if you come up in someone's searches, based on the distance between their chosen location in their settings and yours.
It's not hard to be vague about these things should you choose. There's never been a way to isolate and identify anyone's actual address or location. Even with 'who's near me' switched on the closest is within half a mile, which gives an area of 0.8 square miles. Which unless you live in a detached property a mile from the nearest neighbour isn’t likely to make tracking you down easy. |
