I think it depends very much on how you go about it.
Start sending messages the night you get there and people will assume you're a married man looking for a convenient shag while you're away. Not suggesting you have to wine and dine people but very few like to feel like a bunk up because you're in a hotel alone...plus people often have to plan things around work, childcare and real life...
Lay a bit of ground work prior to your trip can be more successful...put up a meet or a thread a week or so before you get there and get into conversation with local people about whats in the area to do, offer to meet for a drink away from your hotel so people will feel under less of an obligation by coming to your hotel first off...
We've had some hotel meets when traveling for work but you have to do the prep beforehand |

Do not send women messages saying "I am at a hotel in your area. Come and see me". Few women have disregard for their safety. Show some respect, talk to them in advance. Maybe explain that you know no one in the area and are just looking to have a friendly face there. Suggest meeting, maybe dinner/drinks, maybe going to a club together. In other words, behave like a human being. |
