There’s been a a lot of talk about aspartame recently and I’ve seen it mentioned here as well. An Irish cancer researcher has published an explanation of its carcinogen grouping and its worth a read if you’re concerned (or in general!)

I probably can’t post a link here but search irishtimes aspartame and the first result is a link to his opinion piece.

I’m not seeking a debate about science, just posting as an FYI.

David Robert Grimes is also worth a follow on insta for science education.

Ah here, they aren't trying to take away our sugar free drinks are they?

Also, I was in college with David Grimes. So funny to see him mentioned here on Fab.

They’re not but some are trying to claim that MiWadi will give you cancer

Did he always like to show off his biceps?

For those who can’t be arsed reading it, the crux of it is that aspartame has been put in the category of possible carcinogens. Sounds scary until you realise that, other than one know non carcinogen (caprolactam) and the known carcinogens (smoking, alcohol, sunlight etc), everything is categorised as either a probable or possible carcinogen.

Aspartame is in the same category as aloe vera, magnets and pickled vegetables. It is one of the most studied food additives in history and to date, there is no evidence that it is carcinogenic.

So drink your MiWadi (as long as you agree that the best one is orange and pineapple) and get on with your life

It's the taste that gets me. For those that don't know Aspartame has also be rebrandrd as Aminosweet.

Also Blackcurrant miwadi is the obvious choice.

Yup, if it’s the taste that gets ya it’s perfectly reasonable to stay away as much as possible.

It is very prevalent these days though with the obsession with low calorie foods!

I don't hold with mixed flavours unless it's pear and apple because it tastes like pear drops.

while pregnant, 22 years ago, we were advised off all diet drinks because of aspartame and what it might do to the baby. So full sugar all the way.

An important note is context ... Many things are classed as having very mild carsonogenic affects in everyday life

Food

Air

Cleaning products

Building materials

Medications

Sunlight

Radon etc etc etc .

All the amounts are insignificant until you start adding them up.

Just take food alone ...

Processed meats

Dairy

Eggs ( 5 a week can increase likelihood of breast cancer by 70% wtf)

Sweetners

Refined carbs like bread pasta etc.

Alcohol

Fried foods

Granted the amount in each is small, However most of us consume most of these foods every week if not everyday ! Scary shit .

There's no getting away from the fact that cancer keeps becoming more and more common.

Adding an extra cause like aspartame isn't needed . Its not the answer to weight issues unfortunately. Be great if it was . The shitty thing is overweight people are far more susceptible to cancer thus need to avoid carcinogens even more.

"More than 80 000 new cancer cases are estimated to be associated with suboptimal diet among US adults in 2015"

The simplest way to put it is every little does harm

I'd lump aspartame with the other processed shit that I mostly try to avoid consuming. Other people can do what they like to their own bodies.

Red meat is a probable carcinogen, aspartame is still only a possible. This is the differentiation that’s important.

Yes, it's that taste you get with sports drinks. That's usually sucralose, which shouldn't be confused with sugar because of its name. It's actually a petrochemical that is 600 times sweeter than sugar and gives that mywadi taste.

The issue is that a lot of people are hooked that taste expectation and anything natural just tastes meh.

I can't have anything with dairy in it so can't have proper butter and have to make do with margarine.

A lot of the nut or coconut based products are tasteless but have improved over the years but there are so many lactose free items that are doubly processed to remove the sugars.
