Not trying to start a political discussion or argument
If the EU and Trump put tarrifs on each other's products this Wednesday then how does it effect you in general
Not talking about our exports but American products that you buy
I can't think of one thing in my house that's American made apart from a bottle of Jack Daniels
I've always assumed that their cars are shite so wouldn't buy one
Anything else |

For a huge amount of people in this country in the Pharma, Med Device and Tech sectors, it's not really about the American products they buy. It's more about the American products they sell that give them money to buy the things they need. |

I've no idea if I own anything American made.
I don't buy directly from there and would never think to look at anything I have bought through Amazon or eBay.
I know the suppliers are in the UK but where the products are made I've no idea.
Even if I did know it wouldn't affect me as I only buy stuff I can afford and if a similar product is made in Ireland but is more expensive I won't be buying it.
I'm all for supporting local businesses but not if it's outside my budget. |

"I wonder what impact, if any, tariffs will have on US FDI into Ireland. "
It's really hard to know. The Tariffs will mainly effect US consumers. So it depends if they stop buying the products.
There are currently a number of Phamra/Med companies in Ireland investing billions in new factories, right now. |

These things are organised years in advance so it's not going to happen over night I'd imagine
I wonder will Apple be effected since Trump complained about their fine |

I don't think I buy anything that's American made. I get the pharmaceutical products for most in Ireland would go up.
Ford is widely solded here so that's gonna be a kick in the ass for anyone who prefers ford over other motor companies. |

But the cars are made in Europe anyway and it's a separate company to Ford USA as far as I remember |

Ford cars sold here are all manufactured in Europe so won't be affected here by tariffs, unless some of the parts come directly from the US. I don't think they do though. |

As an American living here in Ireland, I think a lot of Trump's tariff policy is hypocritical because, even though they are "American" brands, a majority are made in China or elsewhere outside of the US. |

There are two effects here. There is the effect of trump's tarrifs which will make European goods more expensive in the US, and retaliatory EU tarrifs that will make US products more expensive here.
Exporters and importers in both zones will face additional costs. Jobs will be gained and jobs will be lost. The net effect is very very hard to calculate. |

When you buy a product or service it can be very hard to tell where any materials required come from. Many times elements come from a number of different countries. There is no obligation to tell this information to the end user. Most of the time we have no way of knowing where the parts of the stuff we buy came from. |

There used to be a number of shops that only sold American sweets and chocolate and any I know of have closed because the big complaint was that they were too expensive.
The owners argument was that you were paying for the Authentic American candy experience and initially lots were happy to do so.
It was all bs though because they didn't source the products themselves. They bought them through companies such as the one I was working for at the time and they were no more expensive than products widely available such as Cadbury or Mars. |

As someone who works for an American multi national here I don't see things change in the short term, it's very hard to pick up a manufacturing plant and move it across the Atlantic.
The US patients will still need the drugs, it's a case of who will pick up the extra cost, either the manufacturer or the patient (health insurance), I suspect it'll be the latter

I cant see manufacturers, distributors, or US importers taking a reduction in their margins to cover any of this, so it's going to passed on to end users/insurance companies. In the medium to shower term I guess it depends on what costs are involved in setting up US manufacturing and is the cost increase going to be more or less than the extra tariff cost. |

I always assumed they were shipped from the states at the prices they charged
Robbing feckers
I'd love to know how come Dubai chocolate is so expensive
Is it because people are willing to pay €12.50 for a bar or is it more expensive to make |

I héard a chocolatier from Mullingar on the radio a while ago describing the process. There's definitely more involved in making them the way they make them at least. They were taking on new staff as a result of the demand. Mad stuff! |

If you are wanting to punish US businesses for the action of their chosen leader then sure boycott those brands. They aren't necessarily going to be more expensive though unless they are made in the US and shipped to Europe (which is unlikely in most cases). The USA is too expensive a place for most clothing manufacturers so they are usually made elsewhere. |

So you think that we as European consumers should just allow the US to walk all over us.
It's about personal choices. US companies deserted the US in their droves in the 70s, went to China for economic reasons, preached to is about the benefits of Capitalism, the New World Older,WEF and much more. Rather than sorting it's problems, Trump has decided to caua trade war, let's see what Wall St thinks over the next 4 weeks |

"If anyone really wants to boycott US business then I'd suggest starting with tech companies.
Meta, Google, Apple, Amazon, Microsoft.
Good luck with that!"
1000%
Choosing to boycott products created by US businesses will mean you can basically throw away your smartphone, laptop, tablet etc. No more android, no more iPhone, no more windows. |

I wonder how European sales of Iphones will be treated as technically they're sold as Irish and made in China |

I suspect it's possible to make the hardware out of all non-US hardware... but the ownership, software and IP is definitely American. A boycott of US products should include all Apple and Android products |

How US exports to us are treated will be known when we know what (if?) retaliatory tarrifs are put on US products into the EU. |

The tariffs will affect products into the American market(which is the biggest market for our Dairy, whiskey, alcohol, farming and digital sectors) ..if he puts anything more than 50% on the product,,it becomes unjustifiably high, wont sell, therefore the company produces less and jobs go( & economy slows,,,,)
I own my own company and have seen it first hand this passed month,,pharma has stoped 90% of projects awaiting his decisions - its put us on limbo and had an immediate financial impact,,,nice one |

I don't know, currently over 2000 construction workers in Pfizer, Bristol Myers Squib starting to spending hundreds of millions, MSD fortune spent, Novo-Nordisk starting a huge project in Athlone this summer and Dexcom in Athenry. |

Netflix Amazon etc could be hit hard.
Tesla sales seems to be slowing 40 / 50 percent year to date already without any tarries.
irish distillers, micro distillers plus the big 4 dairy agri business companies could get hit pretty hard if tarrifs from USA were imposed.
Trump might be just being Trump and nothing happens either |

Honestly while it might be something to complain about short-term, it's a great thing for Ireland and Europe. America dominates certain industries that a domestic company would struggle to stay a float. An alternative for consumers will always be the best thing. Competition leads to innovation which can lead to more jobs. |

Like everything else Trump does, expect him to back down or fail at this, too.
If the US amd EU both impose Tariffs, lots of things will be affexted in different ways. Manybwill imlrovise, adapt and overcoem.
I would expect the US Tech sector to be hit the hardest. They make huge profits in Europe.
Their stock props up the Nasdaq, it is the foundation of most pension funds and the spine of their economy.
If % fall there hit double figures the impact on US economy will be enormous! |
