You'll need a USB stick and a hurl. Then follow those simple steps:
1. Copy the file you want to print onto the USB stick.
2. Smash the printer with the hurl.
3. Go to a print shop with the USB stick and have them print your document. |

sounds like one of those always connected (rip off) ink subscription printers (HP by any chance?) if they are not connected to their servers for a while or if the subscription isn't active or you install a incorrect/defective cartridge they don't all work like they are supposed to. Best port of call is usually their support in case they, for whatever reason, locked you out.

Turn off and plug out everything. Disconnect power cables and printer cables.
Remove paper and ink from printer
Start laptop and uninstall printer
Reinstall printer
Put paper and ink back in printer
Plug printer into laptop and turn on
Profit
If that doesn't work check if there is a trouble shooter in the help section of the printer software |

I firmly believe that printer are the work of the devil. You went and bought new ink the last time, there's paper in it and bloody worked the last time you set it up but let it sit there for a while and you can be right sure the headaches start so over again.
Torture!!

"I uninstalled the printer but it won’t actually pick up the printer again when I select find printer.
Are you trying to connect with a cable or Bluetooth etc?" cable connected from laptop to printer. |

I recently ran headlong into this very issue. Still the ability to print directly from my phone is handy |

"I uninstalled the printer but it won’t actually pick up the printer again when I select find printer.
Are you trying to connect with a cable or Bluetooth etc?cable connected from laptop to printer."
With both switched on, if you plug in the cable is the laptop not indicating “new hardware found”?
Just to be clear, I’m neither a kid or a whizz. |

Try a different cable if you have one, or a different port if the laptop had more than one. |

What make and model is the printer ? As was previously mentioned , HP printers (certain models) like to communicate with the Internet in order to determine whether the ink you have in it is legitimate. The printer might also be looking for a firmware update for whatever reason. Are you able to connect it to the Internet via WiFi or etherbet cable ? |

Modem in house is a nice bit away from where printer is. It keeps gaining connection and loosing it seconds later

"Again, I'd ask...what's the make and model of the printer ? And is the ink in it legit or did you purchase from a third party?" HP laser jet 4002 . I didn’t purchase ink for it, another individual did. Was working perfect until this morning.
