There's usually a thread about those who drive far too fast on the road but what do you do when you're stuck doing 40kmph in a 100kmph? They're allowed to be on the road too, I just don't know how to be polite about it.

You overtake when it's safe to do so. Surely you know that already if you're a qualified driver?

I know it sounds like a stupid question or road rage. But what if it's not safe to overtake legally for another 10 to 15 minutes? I'll look it up in the rules of the road after this but it just boggled my mind while driving. And I knew there would be a comment like that, her side mirror was tucked in.

Terribly frustrating but I'm certain you executed a textbook overtaking maneuver within the rules of the road

A nice rock

Frustrating yes, but there is nothing important enough that you can't be 10mins later for instead of risking unsafe overtaking.

Take a deep breath and just enjoy the leisurely spin

somewhere

All you can do is wait to overtake safely and get to where you're going later than you thought

Some people don't make it home when they go out for a drive so don't take any chances

Yeah I generally don't mind being a bit late here and there but I did find it stress inducing. And no, just because I find it stressful, doesn't mean I'd risk anything dangerous but I can't say the same about every car behind me or in that case, the car in front of me.

Had this conversation recently with my father in law after he complained that the guards pulled him over for holding up too much traffic

Funny you say that! There's no minimum speed limit in Ireland outside of the motorway. You could do 5km and there's no rule against it (that I could find). Mind you, there's a few elderly neighbours, driving is the only way they get out of the house. They drive slow and safe, but only on roads where other locals know them and take care with them.

This happened me, but it was a Thursday, and I had to drive 120 km home after a fuel injector blew in my car. I couldn't get above 50mph. Stressful and mortifying.

You met what I like to call ‘a king of the road’. Always a guy, 60 plus, driving by himself. Crawling along, ignoring everything around him. Speeds up for the straight stretches and stays out at the white line so you can’t easily see past.

He’s leading the way. Everyone else can follow.

That’s literally all they have going on in their lives.

And driving without due care and reasonable consideration for other road users is a crime under the Road Traffic Act. So 60 in a 100 while holding up others isn’t his ‘right’.

I would nearly park up and order a taxi. During my last days with my last car, it would lose power randomly. I was always worried it would cut out, made driving extremely stressful.

Oh If I could afford a 120km taxi trip ... What a life that would be 😁

Good point, maybe a bike, God knows 😅 I'm bad enough driving with an amber light. Cars are a blessing and a curse.

I heard a segment on the radio by the RSA a few years ago talking about how elderly people represented a danger on the road due the the higher likelihood of induced road rage and risky overtaking.

Apparently there's a measurable number of death's because it.

There's no minimum speed limit of any of our motorways either. There's just a requirement that your vehicle must be capable of doing 50kmph but there's no compulsion to actually do that speed.

Holding up traffic is an offence but it doesn't imply that you must travel at a minimum speed. If that were the case then the entire of the traffic on the M50 every morning and evening would be breaking the law.

Tbf, driving at 60 in a 100 zone isn't an offence. The manner of driving will be the offence, not the speed.

Thanks for clarifying. The motorway is a rare sight for me. I do have look into that offense, I rarely feel annoyed about being held up, sure it's silage season, I expect it somewhat but usually they're nice enough to pull in or try to maintain a decent speed. I think 60 in a 100 will irritating, is still miles (literally) better than 40

In a pre test lesson, I was told that if I didn’t keep up with the traffic (at or under the speed limit) I would fail my test.

Now granted, I was being good and driving a good bit under the limit lol

I find tractors on a motorway top be an interesting case. They fall into the above category where they're legal on the motorway as long as they are capable of 50kmph. However, if you're flying along at 120 and suddenly there's someone in front of you doing 50 or even less, it can be potentially problematic.

Sure lookit!

Wouldn't you have multiple lanes? And it's not like you shouldn't have the braking distance? Now if you were doing 160...

You might only have two lanes and you might have a bend on the motorway, as plenty of them have bends. You still have reasonable distance but not everyone is great at judging the speed others are moving at unfortunately.

When I'm behind someone driving slow , I just go on my phone/ fab look at hot Irish pics to pass the time , until I find a safe place to pass them out cause I'm a safe driver !

Belfast

A few Sundays ago at 5.30am on a dual carriageway heading north I was just behind a Dublin reg car sitting at 70mph in the overtaking lane. There were no other vehicles on the road at all. He had been in the left hand lane until I joined the carriageway behind him and he immediately moved over to the right.

There are two sections where the speed limit drops to 60mph and he obeyed that but stayed in the right hand lane.

I wasn't in a rush so I didn't undertake but another car overtook me and undertook him before moving into the outside lane and sitting in front of him.

The second car had a Kildare reg.

By the time I turned off, the original car had been in that lane for 25 miles and the other car for about 15.

We didn't see another car that entire time.

No idea what they were at or the significance of neither being local but they were taking the piss and I wasn't going to break the speed limit to get away from them.

I am equally wary of all drivers, arguably the ones I've the most time for are the L plates. They follow the rules more than the guards

Driving with L plates on is scary. The amount of people that pull out in front of you is insane. And try to pass you as they assume you'll be slowing them down.

I think people have a really "holier than thou" attitude with driving when if you're on the road for longer than an hour a day, you realise a lot of people can't read signs or road markings. Sure speeding is bad but it's a daily occurrence seeing people use the wrong lanes on a three way round about
