Is there anyone in my situation?
I'm nearly 39 and living with my parents ( I know what a loser) .
But I don't want to piss away rent money because my parents have room and I pay my way ( bills, food etc) and save money.
But just stuck in a rut and can't get out don't earn enough for a mortgage by myself and earn too much for a council house 🤦
Just so sick of it
and sorry I am lucky to have my parents .
I know people in a lot worse situations homeless with kids it's so sad .

I feel your pain.
Trying to buy a house as a single person is soul destroying. Even if you’re mortgage approved, there’s nothing within budget!

It is a balls. Yes there are worse off but that doesn't negate your own frustration. Occasional vents are allowed!
And don't call yourself a loser, since it's a series of economic events that created this situation, like all the unfinished estates being sold to vulture funds etc.

Dont call yourself a loser .....its the government that's let you down and everyone else in your situation
The social contract is well and truly broken over the last 20 years
In my dads day you got married at 21 , bought a house and had kids on one wage
In my day got married at 25 , bought a house and had kids on two wages
Now most people can't do any of that and it's not down to you.
No answers for you but try not to let it get you down

Increase your income and/or make the sacrifices to maximise mortage amount/deposit.
I am a singleton who recently bought a house in Galway and hoping to buy an apartment in Dublin in next couple of years.
Prospective home owners who direct rage towards immigrants, vulture funds etc. as to why they cannot purchase a property is pointless - wasted energy that will not get them any closer to their goal.

I don't see an issue with where ya are,your saving and your prob giving your parents a hand aswell

Im in the same situation with the added bonus of every second house in donegal is basically made out of wheatabix was renting until Feb but it was unsustainable and became either give up my car or move back home |

I usually steer clear of threads like these. But I really feel for people in similar situations.
When our kids come up, hopefully we will live in a better Ireland.
But if not, I'll be advising them to take their degree or trade somewhere it will be appreciated.
Party for a couple of years and then put your heads down, drive a shitty car, rent a nice but not expensive apartment and save!
It's the only way you will buy a home in Ireland if you don't have money behind you. |

The last time house prices dipped so did the whole economy
Places that were making between 200k to 230k sold for between 40-50k
Wages are decent enough at the min...but everything from food to furniture seems expensive..
Even if the rent was capped properly it might help |

Gary economics does a very simple and educational opinion on this. Basically houses aren't homes but assets now. People wanna blame immigrants but they won't blame anyone who owns hundreds of houses. It's easier to blame people beneath than above. |

I despair for my kids, I don't see any change to the current situation.
For the OP I wouldn't advise getting bogged down at the age of 39 with a mortgage that you would be paying till you retire.
Stay where your are and pay what you can afford into a pension and when you retire consider moving to Thailand and buy or rent a nice pad out there and see out your days in the sun |

If have roof over your head and get on with parents great. If I lost my place and renting I have no where to go. Parents drive me mad and X still has house. I can't even share a place because I'm so antisocial now from living on my own. |

I suppose I'm lucky in that I bought my house at rock bottom in 2014. But for my kids who have decent jobs,it's highly unlikely that they will ever be able to afford a house of their own unless either the ex or myself die. So to the OP, I'd say that you are in a very large percentage of people living with family. It might not be ideal but you have a roof over your head and working. Make the best of what you have. |

Put your name on the help to buy scheme, you get to buy your house with councils help and you can use the 3years tax rebate as your deposit. I know of 4 lads in my job that bought house in last 18 months on their own |

I bought a house 6 years ago as a single person, luckily bought at the right time and keptmy mortgagemanageable, I feel for anyone trying to buy at the minute,prices are absolutely shocking.

My plan is to buy the cheapest rural kip that I can and then park an American style motor home on the driveway. Council Planning department can’t do anything about that as it’s on wheels.
Then renovate the house at my leisure. |

Sorry to hear you are stuck OP. I would imagine there are a lot of people in your situation.
I think there are a lot of people in a lot of very difficult housing situations in Ireland at the moment, myself included.
I am in the 'homeless with kids' category. This is due to circumstances thrust upon me unfortunately.
I honestly do not know how the housing crisis here is going to get resolved. |

I'd love to see a house price crash to enable people to get on the property ladder but then what happens to those who bought in the last few years
Haven't a clue how to solve this crisis but no matter what the government does it doesn't seem to help at all |

What really bugs me is that your rent history has no bearing on a mortgage application.
In over two decades of renting, I've been behind once after I lost my job in 2009. In the twelve years living where I am now I've never missed the weekly rent.
The irony being that a mortgage would probably be easier for me to pay.
But because I don't have x amount of savings, which is almost impossible now when you're renting, I don't qualify.
There's always Only Fans I suppose.
I wonder is there a fetish for my unusually large big toes. |

It is a rough situation.
The important thing is not to see yourself as a "loser" because of the situation you find yourself in. You are a just another 'product' in a consumerist society that has bought in.
Until as a society we see homes as Homes and not a money making racket nothing will change, that is on us all, not just the government, it is the system.

I don’t mean to sound like a dick here but I wouldn’t recommend getting a mortgage at 39, by the time you’ve it paid off you’ll have little life left to enjoy. I hope I’m wrong and we all live long and healthy lives.
Your best bet is to move abroad if you want to get on the property ladder. That being said I’m sure your parents like having to around and helping with the bills. Good luck OP |

You don’t have a hell of a lot of choice if you want to stay in Ireland. No one is going to be able to pay rent on a pension so it’s buy or be in serious trouble. I’d rather buy now and be paying it off as I come to retirement age. |

I appreciate not everyone wants to retire abroad to warmer climates but I would definitely advocate paying as much as the OP can afford into a private pension and considering retiring to a cheaper country. I know a few (couples) considering the Philippines and Thailand as the cost of living such as rent and buying is so much cheaper. |
