Is the rise in the price of drink after leading to an increase in drug use

North Cork

I saw the Taoiseach on tv a few weeks ago stating that due to the rising cost of alcohol in Ireland consumption was down he was as usual praising government policy for this . Then 20 seconds later he is saying however so called recreational drug use is gone up

Join the f##king dots you gob shite. That's my opinion anyway

Yeah it's probably true. I don't think abusing alcohol is any better than abusing drugs so we are pretty much standing still overall.

The inconsistency in our Taoiseach is a regular occurrence, just a walking contradiction.

They will be pushing to legalize drugs bit by bit next so as they can tax that too.

Anything for an ol'tax grab.

100%...You have these quangos coming out every year praising themselves and their policies for reducing alcohol consumption.

And the country full to the neck with drugs.

More people doing drugs now than were was drinking in the 70s & 80s

True and the amount of young people ending up in A&E over the weekends with heart problems and palpitations etc due to drug use is on the rise . A nurse we know was saying that they are busiest on Friday and Saturday night dealing with this .

Alcohol consumption in Ireland has been in decline for about 25 years, we’ve still in the top 10 in Europe and the governments aim is to drop below that.

There is absolutely no doubt that the decline is due to the increase in drug use, young people don’t socialise like they use to and they’re looking for better bang for their buck.

You went to the pub

Now the pub seems to be the end of the night for some before a club

I think its a factor but not the main one.

People have a much broader and healthier range of recreational activities that they do now.

Valid point, i think the population in general are more stressed, accustomed to quick fixes and the next best thing more than ever before.

True. It's more popular to be in the gym than in the pub.

My teen and his friends book a table in the sushi restaurant when they want a night out.

He could be drinking a flagon of Devil's Bit in a ditch somewhere but apparently that's what passes for a good time now.

The cost probably is a factor. So too is the fact that younger people don't want the calories alcohol brings and the food cravings, I'd say

Heard this a few times actually for some people it's the calories are the worry not how addictive cocaine can be I know alcohol can be addictive too. But it's easier spend 1000s on than drink.

A town near you

I can't say if price of beer is an issue but when I was in my nightclubbing heyday in the late 90s as a young buck up in the big smoke a yoke was 5 punts and lasted hours and was very popular but I can't even remember the price of a pint back then.

So I'm unsure if the cost of drink nowadays is a factor or the fact that it is fashionable to be wiping your nose returning from the toilet.

Thankfully nowadays I'm content with a pint of Guinness and a bag of tayto.

I think it’s just this generations vice. We all had one, when I was a teenager it was all about getting a naggin or a box of B&H. Now it’s something else. It seems mad but to some but it is just completely normalised for people of a certain generation, just as bringing a bag of cans to a field was for us

I always find it funny that people who grew up in large towns or cities would go drinking in the local park or field.

I grew up in a relatively rural village at the time. As teenagers, we just went to the local pub! 😂

Same. I grew up rurally and everyone was aware of the pubs that were happy to serve teenagers so no need to drink in fields. I think it's a bit trickier these days with the price of drink in bars being prohibitive.

I maybe shot down for this but despite the price rises I believe since lockdown the amount people drinking regularly that never did before has increased big time.

Drug use tbh I can't comment on it but easy as ever to get ..altho the whole percsribtion drug use is rampant

On other hand I was in a pub couple weeks back and was noticed by person I was with around 3/4 of the pub were drinking zero zero heinkien or Guinness or estrela ..was mad to see..I've often went the zero zero route myself but was mad to see most of pub was on it..now it was day time

Some of my fondest memories are from the nights spent in a ramdon field with a bag of cans and a box of fags, with not a care in the world how we looked during and after 😳

I wonder what over the counter pharma stuff they are using tho 🤔

Skincare is a massive thing now, girls as young as 6 / 7 have their parents buying retinol / retinoids etc for them!

The parents are to blame for that, the kids are just mimicking the content they are allowed to look at on YouTube/ Tick Toc

I've noticed this a bit too. Pubs near us were dieing a death from 2015-2020, there is definitely a small increase. I think due to most just not enjoying drinking at home.

Increasing drug use is definitely a factor. As is people having healthier lifestyles.

But jaysis lads, the cost too. I'm on an ok wage but I still can't justify regular nights out in a pub spending €7/8 a go for a scatter of pints. I'm within walking distance of about 20 pubs so no taxi costs, but friends live further out and that as well as babysitting costs for them is just nuts.

In saying that I am meeting some mates today to go afternoon boozing for the first time in years

I unexpectedly ended up on the beer Thursday afternoon. A very rare occurrence these days but I hadn't seen a friend in a while so we met for 2 or 3 pints.

Ended up out til 12 that night and it cost me just short of €100.

And like yourself, I live 5 minutes from where I was drinking, so no taxi.

Sure ya couldn't be at that every week now.

I used to smoke the exotic stuff and would gladly forego drinking during that time.

I've never taken a drink or smoked or used recreational drugs.

Growing up most of my friends were drinkers but I didn't know anyone who used drugs.

I haven't a clue what the cost of alcohol is now but most of the wasters around here who use drugs don't have to worry about the cost because they come from wealthy families.

I've spoken to people here on fab in their 40s and 50s who come from money and are happy to admit their family habits and think anyone who doesn't partake is a judgemental prick.

I'm happy to admit I'm a judgemental prick.

Unfortunately I think the easy access to 'a bag' is the issue, without out doubt in 90% of work places /pubs there is at least one person that can sell u a bag or source a bag in no problem. Couple of tje younger lads i work with, do the few pre-drinks at home, followed by two drinks in a pub, split a bag (80quid) then into the club they say it costs them about 100euro for the nite, when you think about it in most bars it 6.20 for a pint of beer, 5 pints 31euro, so you can see the draw of getting a bag as they call it
