Can I ask a work office, non fab question.

My office is busy but atmosphere is dead. I think music, or having the radio on in the background will help.

If you work in an office, are you allowed have a radio on in the background, or is it discouraged, and why .....

Thanks in advance

I've never worked in an office but none of the companies I've worked for have allowed a radio to be playing in the office because they were open plan spaces and not conducive to having a radio or music playing.

It would have to be at a certain volume for everyone to hear and not everyone works well with any background noise.

a village near you.

I like music in the background, but my choice might be different from others. Playing recorded music in a commercial environment may require payment to some organisation. A shopkeeper friend of mine was caught a few years ago.

Yes you do

If you work on a computer see if you can hook up speakers and play Spotify down low enough for you to hear it but not to annoy anyone else

Radio stations need a licence to play in a workplace, but you can get non licenced music, but IMO it is worse than no music at all. My last job had it and it was torture.

Maybe get a communal fab computer in the office. That might help with the atmosphere

No office I ever worked in had the radio on. Fine in production settings, but not in multi-person office

When I last worked in an office, which was open plan, we had the radio on. I used to try and get to it first to get Radio 1 on before being doomed to Radio 2 all day

We have the radio on in my current work setting too, although I stream from my Spotify through it

My office environment is not typical. But we have a radio in the kitchen. Also cake can be a good social lubricant

Where I work now we have a radio on, but it’s a small office of 4 people.

I previously worked in a large open-plan office, and there was no radio. I suppose with there being more people, it’s more likely that someone wouldn’t want distractions.

Some employers would probably object to it too, now realising that happy staff are productive staff

A nice rock

Shared office space there is usually a radio station playing i the background.

My office is silent though because my brain cannot be trusted with any distraction tbh

Thankfully on the days WFH has its perks

In my old office we used to have the radio on from 8am until 6pm,

Since I've chnaged jobs, there is no radio and the office is open space. Im fortunate to be in an area where you can hear the hustle and hustle but not get distracted by it, because I'd never get work done

No radios in most professional offices due to noise but also charges.

I've worked in a few dead atmosphere offices. Usually takes about 6 weeks to fix if you put effort in.

Office Olympics was always a great activity.

Mystery notices another good one - keep it PC.

Yellow ducks - i planted about 50 yellow ducks in an office before, numbered them but left a few at home, people searched forever trying to find them all to reveal the duck bandits identity.

Genomes, great if there is plants in the office.

Depending on the office, replace pictures, can be done easier now with AI, but insert people into pictures. Replaced a pic of our CEO and Higgins with one thst had them both with earth vader in the background.

Loads of little small things you can do to create a buzz. Just keep it light, low cost and PC and you will make the atmosphere. But tell NO-ONE it's you.

The radio is always on in the office. It drives me nuts. 🤣 And it's going to get much worse soon once the seasonal music starts. I don't listen to radio in private - not my type of music at all. And the music towards the end of the year is even worse. I need my type of music to work and focus.. So ear buds at full volume it is.

I run a small business and have 8 people in an office, the radio is on all day.

Usually Today FM but sometimes a local radio. Various topics that are discussed or mentioned on the radio are re thrashed out in the office.

This creates a bit of banter and slagging and a good atmosphere in the office.

I will warn you though, there is a serious downside to this: some people will attempt to sing along to songs they like, this can be terrifying and ruin a some you like.

I managed a small off and a radio was on....worked in open plan and it wasn't.. typically open plan a lot of background noise to start with so header.

There is no set rules..but people just tend to go with what's the status quo.
