Barley or wheat straw??

The wheat straw tends to be a bit coarse & rough on tender areas, or so I've been told...

Perfect, there's only room for 1 prick in a situation like that, or maybe 2, or 3...

Hay-fever can a problem, though I've never heard of anyone with straw-fever

Winter wheat straw would be the softest, avoid oilseed or pea straw unless you're looking for a bit of SM

Is it getting a bit cold for shed shenanigans or maybe I'm not hardy enough

Hay does not actually cause hay fever ,it comes from pollen of plants and grasses .

Silage bales would be equivalent of silk sheets for shed riding
