Tips for Planning a Trip Around Donegal?

Dublin

Hi everyone! 👋

I’m starting to plan a trip around Donegal and would love some advice from people who know the area well. I’m looking for tips on must-see spots, scenic drives, places to stay, and any hidden gems that might not be in the usual guidebooks. Also happy to hear suggestions on how long to spend in different areas, and whether it’s best to base myself in one place or move around.

Thanks in advance for any recommendations! 😊

I'm not from Donegal, but from visit years ago, the following were the highlights of my visit:

- Sliabh Liag (English: Slieve League) mountain has spectacular sea cliffs - higher that the Cliffs Of Moher.

- Glenveagh national Park

Both of above are my recommendations for people who enjoy being in the great outdoors and are best appreciated in decent weather.

Lots of great beaches in Donegal also, though probably not optimal time of year for them.

Annagry is a good spot for exploring Carrickfinn beach, Donegal International Airport, Bunbeg with the wreck of Bad Eddie on the beach, boat trip to Gola Island, Glenveagh National Park and Errigal as well as Greenways at Burtonport and Falcarragh and the ferry to Arranmore.

Cork, Kerry, Waterford and surrounds

Depends on the time of year you're planning on going OP, but Tory Island in the far, far north is something special in late summer - it's not uncommon to see the Northern Lights up there on a clear July/August night.

I lived in donegal for 20 years. Hopefully you get good weather when you travel up there.

Start off in bundoran and follow the coast road via donegal town killybegs glencolmcille ardra dongloe gore dunfanaghy letterkenny buncrana carndonagh muff mobile and finishing in derry city or Start in derry and travel in the opposite direction.

Don't forget glenties. You might enjoy a drink with jim mc Guinness and friends.
