The last time I was on fab I tried to start up a walking group. Is this something anyone would be interested in out of those members who live in Northern Ireland. Has anyone started up a similar group? Any tips and advice would be greatly appreciated. This thread is to see if anyone would be interested and also for advice.

Hopefully I’ll get some feedback at least.

My only advice is based on experience.

Lots of people will join thinking that walking/hiking is optional and just a cover for meeting for sex or will expect something sexual to take place while out hiking. This is true for both men and women.

The last group I was in lasted 5 months and had 60+ members over that period but many joined the chat group and left within days when they realised that they really did have to go walking.

The first walk had 20+ people, the second less than 10, the third had 6 and the fourth just 3.

Some women turned up to hike a mountain in revealing and inappropriate clothing because they said they hoped there might be a few hot and fit men in the group while some men turned up in jeans and dress shoes because they wanted to impress.

One person was hospitalised with pneumonia because of how he was dressed while 2 others needed medical attention following bad falls as a result of their designer trainer.

I left the group at that point when the group admin asked me to take charge of what people were wearing or not wearing and advise them accordingly.

Their actual words were "we need a grown adult to keep them right".

This might seem ridiculous and farfetched and it is but it's completely true.

I wish you luck with your endeavour but be prepared for the arseholes who haven't a clue and those full of entitlement and expectation.

I have been in numerous walking groups over the years and still am but my SAR experience won't allow me to go near a fab walking group ever again.

Thanks for your direct, honest and open advice reality bites. Much of your reply is laughable in relation to what people expected and actually showed up wearing to go on a hike. I admire your honesty on the subject, directness and the account you’ve given. It’s an account which seems on a par to a carry on movie and it brought a smile to my face.

Damn. Never thought of doing that. I've a stiff finger now from typing and I didn't even mention the background drama and bitch fighting and threats to push people off the top of a mountain

Yes there will be the normal human characteristics coming to the fore in some individuals but this will always happen in any group dynamic.

Check profiles for those you would consider suitable for your particular group.

Pick easy walk routes at least in the beginning. People will tend to chat while walking so the pace will be relatively slow.

Find locations with somewhere nice to sit and have coffee afterwards.

"Organise it and they will come"

No it’s not going to be a hike up the mournes.
