As the title says , the release of the 1926 Ireland 🇮🇪 census is this saturday April 18th.
Why is this significant..?
The last census in Ireland 🇮🇪 were the 1901 and 1911 census. Which are both free online.
We did not have a 1921 census because of the war of independence. So up next was the 1926 census.
Under Irish law, you have to wait the 100 years , to release it to the public. Which is happening thos weekend.
So whether youre into ancestry and genealogy or just nosey about your grandparents or neighbours everyone should go check it out this weekend. Its free online, and it'll be amazing what you can find out.
I hadnt seen a thread about this, and its something I do alot of iny spare time. So just said I'd tell yee all about it lol

I’ve been waiting YEARS for this to be released, afew empty threats of it being released over the last few years that never came to fruition. I’m hoping this helps with one particular brick wall in my family tree 🤓🤓 |

I’ll be the same, although most likely have ancestry open on the laptop and the census on the computer. I’ve been doing my family tree for over ten years now. Also happen to be a certified genealogist so am happy to offer help to anyone who needs it 🤓 |

Ancestry will be open , national archives will be open , and I'll have links to military 🪖 records in KEW open also. Busy lil bee 🐝 on saturday. Ive my family tree done. Took ages, during covid. But its done thank god. Yep if anyone needs help , im happy to help also. |

Anyone living in an old house 🏚 whether in the countryside or in a town / city can literally see who lived in their house 100 years ago. Fill in family gaps. Check family professions,where people were born. Religious beliefs. All will be free to view on Saturday. The excitement is building. |

Unfortunately doesn't apply to NI records as it's after partition and the personal records from that year were destroyed, apparently deliberately,during WWII.
The next available census details for NI is from 1939 which was used for rationing etc but hasn't been digitised. |

Yes, and to add all the older ones for Ireland 1841 1851 1861 1871 1881 1891 were all destroyed in a fire in the customs house during the war. |

There's actually about a thousand people in the state that are over a hundred. I was amazed to hear that recently. The cso attempted to contact them all as they need to give their sign off on their information I believe, they at least need to be told.
I'll be checking up on relatives and also the then occupants of my house as its over a century old. The same family then were living in the previous census I think but ask me again after Saturday  |

I’ve viewed UK census’s over the years that have lines redacted, very annoying from a research perspective |

Same as. Just goes back to the 100 years rule you see. Was the same recently with people's ww2 military records. You couldn't access certain stuff as some men were still alive. |

There was a genealogy open day a few years ago in Cabinteely park Cabinteely house. I found it very interesting and informative.
Got to trace back a few years but stuck now.
There is information on Deansgrange and Glasnevin cemetery.
I was looking up 1841/51 census last night but I am stuck at the moment. It is really interesting searching the census. I must congratulate all the staff who have put the info on line. Looking forward to it. |

As much as a hundred years of romantic history was beat into us at school. The Civil War was a dirty campaign of settling scores and stealing property belonging to others, by both sides.
Expect a lot of people to raise that when this consensus doesn't line up with all the previous! |

I’m mad to do my family tree I started with ancestry and got very little maybe I’m not using it right but only back to my great grandparents but not fully. I seem to have hit a block wall. Any advice from your experience greatly appreciated thanks |

All wars include elements who will use the situation to further their own ends. Reducing the entire war to just that would be a huge mistake though. The people who were using the war to further their own ends were rarely the people who lay in wet ditches or on cold hillsides waiting to attack their enemy. |

Do you know your great grandparents names , maiden names also. ? Good hint is to find their marriage certificate. On their marriage certificate if gives their parents names = hence next line back. Then those , look up their marriage certs etc etc and see if that will get you back 2 or 3 more generations. |

100 yrs - is suppose to equal a generation.
There was a method to thr logic behind it.
It's the same with the logic of recording people from 1912-21 and during the whole period of the independence struggle. There were no official statements taken from people who were regular or irregular during the civil war period.
The logic behind it was to allow the "healing process" and not allow limit transfer to the next generation.
There are some folklore bits in county archives that were gathered in the 1990s though.

Look for death certs and cross check with parish records.
I was doing some of my own recently and learned that a good chunk were all buried in the same section of a graveyard over the space of 100yrs with faint makers still visable |

The files on the people of the six counties are not included
To the victors go the spoils of war Thousands of men on the loosing side had to head of to England and America they will be missing
And many men from the North who came south for the so called Northern offensive couldn't go back home again so expect Ulster names popping up |

Northern offensive was never going to happen (there was no money to fund it and it would of been a fools errand) Free state was bankrupt with reparations to be paid. Quickest and safest way to generate revenue was along the border with custom checks and it diverted a large force away from Dublin.
What the document won't really show is the level of social deprivation. Much of the population was far below the breadline. Mortality was high. It will be interesting to see the areas near the treaty ports. I was doing a few bits recently and came across a lot of UK based families that would of lived in the housing attached to depots post 1918. Most of the names died out by the 1960s/70s.
It's fascinating stuff to me but boring as fuck for a lot of people

Great way to spend an hour or 2 on a Sat....my great-granddad lived to the ripe old age of 90 and my son is actually called after him so the name didn't die out with him

Massive shout out too my great grandparents and my grandfather who I found early this morning living in the same house 🏠 my mum was born in. All old Irish volunteers 🙋♂️. Now cracking open a can of Guinness in yer memory 😀.

The exact address can see all the neighbours etc. Prob cause the were huge IRA heads they didn't do it. Fear of being caught. |

Mine were the same. My sister actually lives in an old IRA safe house atm. Have you checked the military 🪖 archives for your relatives IRA membership ?. Thats also free online at military.ie site. In relation to the house, if you wanna message me ill have a look, guarantee 💯 its something silly / straight forward. |
