In a quiet little country lane where nothing unusual ever seemed to happen, my aunt once claimed she witnessed the most extraordinary non-event imaginable: a story that somehow never took place. According to her, it began with my neighbour standing at a lay-by at precisely the wrong moment, as if waiting for something that would never arrive, except the local Irish traveller in a Ford Transit. Meanwhile, my uncle’s cat sat on the fence watching, staring intently at the Ford Transit, as though watching invisible characters move through an unwritten plot. The only words spoken were Ga on, ride me like a piebald! The actions that unfolded were something the cat had never seen before and yet there was a strange sense that something important had almost occurred but didn’t. By the end of it all, everyone went back to their lives, slightly unsettled, unable to explain why a story that never happened felt so real. |
