The turf season is well and truly underway, who is off to the bog?

Who still has nightmares of the back breaking intensive labour and thr mamories of bog tay with a hang sandwich...

I definitely have PTSD from being dragged to the bog.

Turning turf was the worst.

That's when you should of "organised something to break" - I remember a similar prick who would toss square bales of hay up the elevator in the shed. I'd used to let them build up each time until he took it handy.

Mullock'n got him no where in the end except into an early grave.

What an absolute waste of time and human energy for no energy gain.

Turf is one of the poorest calorific value fuels with the highest carbon dioxide emissions when compared to other soiled fuels such as coal or wood. Add to that the fact that the majority of heat produced goes straight up the chimney releasing toxins into the atmosphere to poison your neighbours.

Solar powered electric heating is far more efficient and therefore more cost effective and less polluting and doesn't cover your house in a layer of dust and making it stink of smoke.

Give me nuclear power over he burning of compacted sphagnum moss any day.

Are you secretly touting for Bam as the lead contractor?

For nuclear, there needs to be a plan not another knee jerk reaction with extended delays and unaccountable over spend on thr guise of "we're getting a good deal"!

Ah sure if BAM got that job it would never get finished.

Can't even build a hospital extension.

Turf forever.

It warms you twice.

Once when you are sweating on the bog. And then when you are sitting in front of the fire.

I mean I agree burning turf is a bit of a nightmare environmentally, but solar powered electric heating is a no-go too for most people.

I guess you're talking about running a heat pump off solar PV? Obviously your need a massive solar system with a massive battery for overnight home heating while the sun doesn't shine. Plus the cost of that expensive new heat pump and the required insulation and airtightness. I don't know what that would all cost for an average house to retrofit but it will be absolutely eye watering.

Have to say I miss the open fire/stove.

In an apartment with Air to Water Heating, it feels soulless especially during a dark evening

....

Burning turf doesn't solve the problem of poor insulation and airtightness.

Perhaps the use of compressed phagnum moss could be investigated as a form of insulation material rather than using fiberglass or polystyrene type products.

A properly designed combination of Solar Thermal and Photo Voltaic panels could provide sufficient hot water for showers etc and space heating in well insulated and draught free homes eliminating the need for expensive air-to-water heatpumps.

The engineering solutions exist it just takes a little lateral thinking.

More politicians with an engineering background would be a help to getting the right policies in place.

Once Putin is finally kicked out of Ukraine Russia will have to sell off some nuclear submarines to pay war reparations. Perhaps those subs could be floated up the Liffy or the Lee and plugged directly into the electricity grid to replace fossil fuel electricity generation. No need for BAM or any other contractor to be involved.

🤔🤔🤔😉

High levels of insulation and air tightness is a prerequisite for air to water heat pumps. They don't work otherwise. Not so for burning turf. The cost of all this hardware required would cost more than a lifetime of buying and burning turf. Prices need to come down or grants need to go up. At the moment it's pure pie in the sky for most people.

"Why dont all the people who preach about fossil fuels put the money where their mouth is and people could afford to change."

They kinda do to be fair with the grants for sustainable energy. Taxes fund the grants obviously. This is a good thing... But to say people in normal Irish homes can be entirely heated by solar is just unachievable right now. Building to standard where this is possible would make house prices rocket and deepen the housing crisis. Part of the housing crisis is caused by the burden of meeting the v high standard of renewable energy and energy conservation standards which hits the price of new builds. It's a complex issue to resolve.
