I understand that it's mostly northern European's & Nigerian's that refer to their homeland as the Fatherland...

I think even the early Irish used it....
However, I believe it was a little known German by the name of Adolf who made the phrase popular again in the 1930's in his witty, light hearted little thom Mein Campf.
Countries that had empires, England, Russia, etc. ..In an attempt to form a tenuous bond with their conquests while all the time exploiting their recourses used the term motherland....
