No country for women. A history lesson in the abuse of women in this country. Hard to watch but we should and we should never forget.

No male replies and 100 new posts about women by men since op posted

. I would fear for my daughter but I've helped her be as strong as I can and what's not covered I'll look out for. Standing on a gaa field on Sat and the coach came up to the only 2 men in a sea of women said lads were short coaches you might need to fall in. I never owned a pair of boots some ex gaa players standing beside me . Tough battle ladies. If the smear test scandal was men it would be still in the news

It's sad that a love island thread gets more response.

Maybe tonight watch part two. This is our story as women of this country. These women our are sisters. Maybe we need to etch them in our brains so that we never ever forget. The lady laundry shut it's doors in 1996. This country has done many wrongs to many people but what happened to women and children was horrendous.

Really hope this is on some sort of catch up.

Missed it.

As a blow in I'm always willing to educate myself more about the countries past

RTE player ... it examines a lot of what has gone on and allows women and the children of these " fallen" women a chance to give their testimonies.

It says on my profile I'm pretty unshockable. But when it comes to history that's totally untrue.

Actually perfect timing as I've run out of documentaries to watch.

And yet a huge number Will flock to see the pope this summer, paying a nice price to do so. A pope who refuses to release hundreds of thousands of documents detailing the abuse in Ireland alone. The names of nuns and priests, those who covered it up and where they were sent after to continue the abuse.

Those who blindly support the businesses (church) must shoulder some of the blame as they are nothing without support. I have heard to many stories from elderly family members to even try and tolerate anyone's defence of the church anymore

The church is still running many institutions in this country - one of it is education - and still has quite a substantial influence.

Hopefully one day Ireland will become a proper secular state with a secular education system that has no links to religion.

Anyhow thanks op for drawing attention to the topic and the program, I must watch it when I find a quiet moment.

Hopefully church and state will be separated. The battle to do so has started and I for one will be doing what I can to bring this forward. We as a nation have found our voice

Anywhere that organised religion had power in the state you will find major scandals involving the oppression of women but this country is probably the worst to involve the Catholic Church and State bodies and even though the church has lost much of its power the State continue to cover up as much as it can because there is so much corruption in this country those in power are terrified that the house of cards will come falling down and they will all be exposed.

Covering for each other and when there is tribunals it leads nowhere and anything important is locked away for decades so no one alive is held accountable.

Yes and it's for this reason we cannot remain silent. There's been generations of silence in this country. People standing by saying nothing when it was known abuse was taking place. On the same week as the women of the laundries were honoured an Irish bishop called for mother and baby homes to help women " in trouble" .. I just have no words !!!

As long as we as a nation accept this and just grumble at screens nothing will ever change ... we have to make it change. As was said it took the feminists and the Queers to show everyone what this country is capable of if we stand together

Just on another note there was a good piece of journalism by Rosita Boland about Anne Lovett a few months ago, well worth reading, such a tragic and horrendous case.

I rarely watch tv, but will look for this programme on the rte player. I agree it should be watched, no matter how uncomfortable it is to see. It's important that we do not choose to look away from what our mothers, grandmothers, sisters and aunts had no choice in. How can we choose to feel comfortable when they had no choice?

It's an eye opener on how the state and church treated the women and children of Ireland from the formation of the state....

As a man I am ashamed of the men before me who ran the state

Fair point, well made. I just thought men may have been in more powerful positions at the time and men and women implmented the laws.

Men did hold power by a majority but women were involved too. There's nothing to be gained by blaming one sex, the nation and our attitudes are what allowed it to happen. It's a collective

I'm already educated on the matter, I was just wondering if it was about parents sending their pregnant kids away knowing they would come back without a baby, and their babies thrown in septic tanks instead of sold for research.. or if it had something a bit better to offer.

It's unbelievable that people still follow and respect this institution. It goes beyond criminal, this religon knowing damn well that women with power were a force to be reckoned and that is why we were suppressed. Over the years it seeped into the psyche of everyone that women were less intelligent, less able, less worthy of men. And certainly sexually confident women, lots above! That's just a tip of the iceberg. Irish women were 2nd class citizens and could not continue with their career post marriage.. Jesus I could go on. So that's the bad stuff that happened us Irish women, a mere generation ago

Dunboyne & Dublin

Haven't watched it. There's a lot this country can be ashamed of, though let's also say that every country has skeletons in its closet. We are not unique in that.

At least it is being recognised, publicised, televised and debated, to the point of apologies from a government, some of whom weren't born when some of these things occurred.

As I say, I haven't watched it, so the above is just a general comment on my feelings about a lot of things in our past.

By open discussion, we help to prevent reoccurrence.

Though, not meaning to sideline, with Trump caging kids in America, you do wonder how well a lesson is learned.
