Anybody know can you just walk into a doctor's office and get moles taken off or do you have to be refered to a specialist?

No idea, but if you have any kind of mole that is growing or changing in any way, you should go to your GP sooner rather than later

basically if a doc wants them examined they'll remove it?

Very few GP's will do it. They now refer you to a specialist. But only if they think there maybe cause for concern.

If you want it removed for no reason apart from looks you'll have to pay for that from a dermatologist.

My GP does it, but he has done a degree in dermatology too so maybe it depends on the doctor. I would imagine if they thought there was any wrong with it you'd be referred on.

Somewhere in Co. Down

I had a mole removed at my doctors had to go back and get a larger section off as it had spread my gp did that as well. But they have a clinic every week for it. That was when I lived down south.

I've had two removed before, my GP referred me to the hospital for them. They did require general anaesthetic though so it probably depends on the mole?

I had one removed last year. Had to go to the dermatology unit in Waterford twice. First time for an exam then back down to have it removed. Actual procedure was a thing of nothing. Only problem was it was on my foot so I couldn't drive. It wasn't expensive either.

Most g p will examine a suspicious mole and ask about changes in color or appearance , edges becoming jagged or itchy , bleeding or any other unusual recent change in the mole , if concern is raised you will be sent to a consultant dermatologist who will examine you thoroughly for moles photograph and ask you to return in 6 weeks , whereby any growth or changes can be observed , if the mole is considered to have changed you will be scheduled to have it removed , following which it will be biopsied and you will be given further advice depending on the result .
