I can remember when they used to be referred to as 'continental quilts'

"Duvet or quilt??

Technically and historically the duvet was one large sack, half filled with anything from hay to feathers. In the morning the filling was shaken to the bottom and the empty half folded on top, at the foot of the bed to air the mattress. At night the bag was openned and shaken to distribute the filling and get some important air in.

A quilt is made up of lots of little filled pockets sewn together... So...

Technically what we tend to sleep under now, being stitched in big panels, is neither one nor the other... Or both, dependant on your point of view...;-)

Technically, a quilt is a handmade 'thick blanket', whereas a duvet is a stuffed blanket...traditionally with down, hence some of the mature generation still call them 'eiderdowns', although modern usage and requirement needs brought about the use of synthetic fillers.
