I always do that and I also did it this morning when I did the shopping. I usually just say the greetings, like hello and then thanks have a nice day, but sometimes I have a little conversation with them, it is fun

All the time and with a smile.

My personal bug bear (bare?!) is when they have conversations over me or behind me with their mates on other checkouts. It poor customer service.

I should be your priority when serving me, telling Tina what you did with Darren round the back of the bins can wait!

I greet people.

When they greet me back and time permits, I will hold a short conversation with them, even those on helplines during those moments of silence when they’re searching for my details.

It’s amazing how people’s tone can change when you ask them simply how they are, if they’re working from home......

Always have a brief chat and if not busy and they’re friendly too then linger a bit, life’s too often a rush!

If there’s an attraction both parties tend to send a fairly obvious vibe as you know it’s a bit like a speed date and within a minute you have to move on for the conveyor belt!

I do, and have a conversation as I pack.

This led to a vinegary old lady tutting, huffing and making snarky remarks under her breath, aimed at me being slow.

I explained to her, very quietly, that I can't pack fast and not having a conversation as I pack wouldn't make me pack faster.

She then said other people had chosen a different till as I was taking too long (I had a full belt of shopping to pack). So I replied that they had used their brain and realised I would be some time, as I had a lot of shopping to pack.

I was being quite polite, but as I walked away with my heavy-laden trolley she had one last dig, which was the last straw and I slowly backed up and called her a miserable old cunt.

As I walked away I felt terrible.

I’m always polite, I remember a guy giving the servers some grief at a festival fir queuing so long fir chips then being told when he got to the front that there’s a wait while they cooked more.

When they did come he started again....

So while no one else says anything from 10 people back I pipped up

“Oi dickhead!

Leave them alone, they’re busy as hell trying to serve everyone. You’ve got your chips! Now say your sorry and fuck off”

I got a thank you and a free can of dandelion and burdoch

Yes I do and even more important now that you can’t see smiles because of wearing masks. I don’t like holding up a queue but during lockdown it was sometimes the only person I would have spoken to for a few days.

I particularly love it when I go to France. There it is obligatory to say “Bonjour Madame/Monsieur” to staff and if in a local cafe to new arrivals also that enter and a “Merci, Au revoir” when you leave.

For some lonly people, living alone ect. The chevkout person maybe the only person they have spoken to all day. Tutters can tut!

I worked the evening shift in a big Tescos. Were human too! Sitting there for 6 hours shifts can be mind nubbing. I did ignore those who came up, chatting on the phone and ignored me, without even a hello. I'd chuck their stuff down the end, for them to pack. This was in the day, when we had to scan and pack as we went.

t depends on the supermarket. I'm a pleasant enough sort but in Aldi they THROW the shopping at you and I set myself a little target of getting it all into the trolley before they finish throwing the last item at me. Breaking sweat at the end - it's all I can do to pant and smile as I insert my card... into a machine, not the till assistant.

However, then they always ask THE question

How many bags do you need???

(Yes I should take the reusable ones)

My reply is always I have no idea you are the expert in this part, the look I get could curdle milk.

It’s as though I should know exactly the right number. So after being glared at I guess at 3, if I don’t need all 3 I still take the spare.

If I dare need a 4th I hear the fuff noise before one is begrudgingly pushed towards me.

As I leave though I always wish them a good day as I push my wobbly wheeled trolley off mumbling under my breath

I hear the plea to be lovely to retail staff. I hear it too much. They are not all lovely, some of the are downright rude and dismissive.

People need to be considerate of each other. I'm not into one section of society being told they should be nice to the other...... Shopworkers might begin to think it's their right..... is that why some of them are so snotty do you think ?

Yes I know there are VERY rude customers but I still don't think i need to be 'nice' or 'grateful' cos someone is a shop worker.

Politeness should be par for the course.

Politeness should be par for the course."

In my experience retail staff aren’t usually snotty to begin with however their experiences over time mean many do become like that. Have you worked in retail? I think there are more people who feel “the customer is always right even if the customer is slapping you in the face” than there are snotty retail staff.

Yes of course it goes both ways I totally agree. I just think people look down on retail staff. I’m glad I’m no longer in retail and would hate to go back.

You’re right that you don’t need to be grateful that someone is a shop worker. On the other hand their resentment comes from even if people are abusing them THEY have to be grateful of the customer.

"Yes of course! It’s polite firstly and secondly they are doing something to help me! Definitely a little chat if there’s a cue! I imagine the pressure they must feel sometimes when there’s a long line of grumpy customers staring at them to hurry up.

Does the , ' They are doing something to help me.' apply to everyone ?

They are doing a paid job and it's nice to be served by the ones doing it well who actually like the public but they are not sacrificing their life for yours. They don't do it for you they do it for the money"

Clam down granny! No life sacrificing by anyone! Simply responding to the question asked by the OP! Customer service normally involves helping or assisting customers. If I’m the customer being served the check out person is helping me purchase my goods!

"I always do that and I also did it this morning when I did the shopping. I usually just say the greetings, like hello and then thanks have a nice day, but sometimes I have a little conversation with them, it is fun "

I only say 'Hello' if its a female with big tits...

The above is a joke...

I even say 'Hello' if she has small tits...

Another joke....

I honestly thought everyone greeted checkout workers

Now if they don't reply then that would be the end of the conversation as some people just don't want to chat with strangers.....who are staring at their tits......

"I do, and have a conversation as I pack.

"

I'm confused, the old vinegary lady was the one serving you?

I always show my appreciation by greeting the shop staff, but occasionally you meet an individual who either hates their job or has had a bad day; doesn't reciprocate.

Many of the staff at the supermarket I use must think I am a mystery shopper, because the receipt always includes staff discount!

There can be some right miserable staff - I know, I work with them - and sometimes they can be rude. Sometimes they might come across rude but with best intention, and sometimes they're great. I don't tolerate staff being rude, but nor would I expect them to take rudeness from a customer and this happens in abundance.

Just as an added thing - I really don't understand the customer mentality of picking up a chilled item and walking to the other end of the store to dump it on a shelf. Or even to look at something and not put it back where it was, but instead cover an adjacent product...

Genuinely, most do. Not so much the "oh it didn't scan so it must be free" type stuff, but just a smile and a few words can really change your day.

As a rule of thumb, arsey customers get forgotten quickly, nice customers get remembered and real pricks get given names, and laughed about forever.
