Bore da people

I know it may seem a bit of a strange place to go for thoughts and advice, but I’ve found this place to be a lovely source of support over my ten years here. I know it’s not a substitute for medical help!

I’ve always been fairly prone to headaches, but they’ve become worse in the last few years. The old days of battling through them at work, taking a tablet and getting up the next day are gone - these last multiple days and are impossible to shift.

It’s got to the point where I’m questioning whether I can work full-time much longer. I’ve only lost one day to them in the last year, but there’s many shifts when I don’t feel I can do my job properly.

All this at a time when I’ve accepted a bit of extra work for a few months.

I have been to the doctor, and been given tablets - don’t seem to make much difference. I’ve had my eyes tested, I regulate my caffeine, gave up alcohol, drink water, I’m reasonably fit (walk miles most days and do regular mountain walks) and eat reasonably healthily etc.

I just wondered if anyone could share thoughts and advice (I’ll take hugs/cwtches too!). Things that have helped them.

I was in tears with it last night. I’m a soppy, emotional Celt at the best of times, but this was different. Pain and worry, I guess - it’s affecting my life quite a bit.

I have work tonight .

Nothing worse than a headache you can't shift I feel for you OP. Different locations of pain can indicate different causes, have you been able to work out generally where the pain starts or stays primarily?

Bore da OP.

Have you had an eye test recently? Know my headaches are worse if my prescription isn't right. I also get massive banging headaches with aerosols like deodorant or perfume etc. I've had to ban people in work spraying in the loos as if I went in even hours after them I'd be ill.

I take codyramol which is for my damaged lower spine and also for headaches. If. Didn’t take painkillers they would be intense. Not sure if you’re s are migraine level. But anything to remove stress would be helpful.

Could be something chiropractory could sort out by adjusting your neck muscles and nerve endings. There has just been a new device released for cluster migraine that your Dr may be sympathetic with, it's called GammaCore. It's been signed off by the FDA and now NICE as effective in stopping migraine attacks (have a read over it).

Just over there

I suffer from extreme migraine which is controlled with daily meds now. Before this diagnosis and correct meds though I suffered for 2 decades with chronic daily headache interspersed with migraines. Chronic daily headache is a condition you can be treated for. I found it more debilitating than the migraines over the years! Dm me op if you'd like more info xx

Thanks so much for taking the time to reply (Diolch BMF!).

A few thoughts in reply:

- they vary in location. Different sides etc. It often feels as if a heavy weight has settled over my eyebrows. My eye sockets, nose etc hurt. Other times it more general, and feels like a part of my skull is rattling and screaming almost

- Cocodamol doesn’t help, unfortunately

- I’m glad you said chiropractor actually. I must look into that. I find myself tilting my head back a lot when I have them. Have been waking up with them too, which is new

- Thanks Cherry. I’ll DM later

- BMF - I’m the same. Smells can set it off, make it worse. I crave pure, fresh air when I have them so badly

I’ve missed some comments above - I’ll add those later.

Thank you so, so much everyone

I’d suggest you go back to your GP and a change of tablets if those don’t work. They may be an alternative.

Are they migraine type headaches? Cheese and chocolate are known triggers - as is stress and anxiety

All over the place! Northwesr, , Southwest

Are they all around headaches? Are they focused at the base of the skull or on your forehead / eyes? Are they migraine type?

I too wondered if there could be a food trigger but it could be anything so maybe try an exclusion diet?

Sorry, asked above without seeing this reply

Many headaches are cervicogenic in narure and may have an upper cervical component.

Out of curiosity, do you sleep on your front?

Hi all - thanks for all the replies. Really appreciated!

Just to cover a few other things mentioned and not yet answered.

- food could be something to look at further. I avoid chocolate totally, but do have some cheese. Furthermore, I sometimes feel naseous, but ravenous (if that makes sense!) when having a bad headache

- I don’t sleep on my front. Not sure if that’s a good or bad thing

- The headaches are in the upper half of my head. I do wonder about posture though, as I’m constantly shifting my head position when I have a headache e.g. tilting it back.

Thanks so much, again.

Could it be sinus related? I suffer sometimes and it gives me a horrible headache! Also have you tried changing pillows?

Sometimes if nothing else shifts it (sleep, shower, less/more caffeine, fresh air, calm down, painkillers, exercise, food, water), I follow self massage videos on YouTube. They can be really effective (definitely worth a look - I enjoy Rachel Richards Massage). A good firm rub around the occipital ridge also does wonders for me - don't touch the middle indentation, but very firm on the rest of it can be blissful relief.

Are you stressed or have anxiety? I have this thing called bruxism and nocturnal bruxism and it causes horrific headaches bordering on migranes and sometimes earache... Its because I clench my jaw but it took forever for the cause to be found... I was given blood test after blood test sent for my eyes to be tested etc

Hi

Thanks so much for the latest replies.

I do often wonder if its sinus related - my head often feels incredibly “full”

I kinda massage my head, but it’d be good to have a more formal method. I’ll definitely watch the YT videos

I did wonder about pillows, so am trying one not two. The jury is still out on that!

I don’t feel particularly stressed and anxious. I am capable of being that way, though!

Bore da,

I have a friend who got crippling migraines and she was actually advised by the doctor to get botox in her forehead!

She did as a last resort as nothing else touched the pain and it has definitely helped her.

Not for everyone but thought I'd mention.

Also sending hugs

For what it's worth, my missus gets really bad headaches too tunnel vision, numbness, loss of speech, not a stroke, I must add, shes been tested.

She has very low blood pressure, when she feels it coming on, she lays down in a dark room with face mask on, and sometimes we have used a chilled ice pack rap to go over her eyes and temples, that seems to help her quite a bit.

Hope this helps you

Like cherry I have had daily headache ranging from annoying to migraine for years. The only difference is, I tried everything the doctors could offer, had an mri. Then got told yea you get headache, we don't know why and can't do anything about it.

That was just to share my story, you have had some good advice. To me it sounds like something sinus related, perhaps allergies triggering them off, we are getting to summer..

Anyway as someone who suffers too, I hope you find your way of getting through it.

Thank you for the hug!

Someone else mentioned botox - I’d consider anything!

Thanks so much to the recent posters and everyone - means a lot .

"Feel better x"

Thanks IASD - I do feel better today. It takes me a while to feel normal again.

People, including yourself, have been very helpful. I mustn’t sleep on this now - it’ll be back, and I need to tackle the root causes.

Thanks again.

I suffered all my life with many different types of headache, you name it I've had it.

Aside from headaches now after my covid jab, I can count on one hand the headaches I've had in 2 years, my secret? Sleep on your side or back. Stop sleeping on your front with your head to the side. You can train yourself to change how you sleep. This is the one thing that stopped my headaches. And the one piece of advice I always give.

I hope this helps.

I just saw this, you don't sleep on your front that's good. I echo someone else and say see an osteopath.

I also know someone who had success with Botox, need a specialist practitioner though.

When you say 'regulate your caffeine' how much tea/coffee etc. Do you drink a day? Some peoples bodies just cant cope with it and gives massive headaches.

I suffer with migraines and it may not work for you but I visited a chiropractor and realigned my back. The migraines disappeared for a good 18 months. I need to go back to chiropractor for an mot but it did not half help me lose the headaches
