Who remembers these wonderful short films that used to feature just before shutdown on the BBC?
I always found them scary as a kid (staying up later than I should have!)
Nonetheless, they obviously did their job admirably as I still recall vividly (and indeed graphically), why never to play frisbee near pylons…,whilst wearing bell bottoms  |

American 1950s is the Top Shelf of public information films. Not for scaring but for the absurdity. Complete excellence in the vilification of groups that didn't fit in with Conservative America. Things like Red Peril and the Stanger Danger (aka keep your children away from gay men) videos. |

I went to agricultural college. We regulary had to watch tractor safety films. 'Know your tractor, know your ground' has stuck with me. We never hardly got to play with the damn tractors but I know how not to be mangled in a pto shaft or plough sideways on a vertical hill at 30mph. |

Did they show the Apache PIF as well?
The message was definitely to tell kids not to play around on farms and equipment as they can be dangerous but it's still pretty messed up how it plays out like Final Destination for kids. |

To my mind, they've now incorporated all the public health messages in soaps such as EastEnders. They're always telling us what to do. Casualty's particularly bad on this score: practically every ailment is self-inflicted. |

I agree. As much as it is good to have a storyline that spreads awareness of certain health issues, there does seem to be too many of them which does get in the way of giving decent entertainment and it makes the soaps kind of depressing to be honest. |

How much of an actual problem kids breaking into power stations was I have no idea. Showing them could just have been for morbid kicks for all I know. |

Ours were designed to shock.
That said, the ones that Aussies do are just as effective. As it's a PIF, the gloves are off - you rarely see anything gory, but it's no less scary for that. If anything, it can be nightmare fuel. |

The one that haunted me as a kid was the one about not walking on frozen ponds. They showed some lads playing and the ice cracking.
We got shown that in primary school one winter when some kids had been playing on an old curling pond in the woods when it iced. I think I was about 8 and it was terrifying.
I hated the kite one with the power lines as well. Used to drive my Dad mad checking for power lines with my kite that never got more than a foot above my head
There was another about playing on the railway and it shows a show lying on the track at the end, but I i it vaguely remember that one. |

Slightly off topic but still relevant, had any one been to hazard alley in Milton Keynes. I went with school and it sounds just like these clips, but it's interactive you see all kinds of potential hazards and it helps train your brain to be shit scared of any potential scenario that you may encounter in life ever.

Who remembers that Bonfire Night PIF where it's in a hospital with this dark droning music going on and all you hear is a crying child while you see a doctor running, a upset mother and then the camera moves into the surgery and a surgeon blocks the camera.
What's messed up is the child is still crying in the surgery and it made me wonder, what were they doing to him? |

I saw the exact same storyline in Casualty once. Kid goes up a pylon to retrieve his kite. Some jerk shouts up to him to get down. The kid reacts to the shout, gets electrocuted. I'm not sure how prevalent pylon electrocution is in our modern society, but it looks like we need to be warned about it frequently. |
