Check your Passport is in order

Salford Quays , Manchester

I came across a rather disturbing article in the Daily Mail last Saturday.

Apparently, my Passport isnt Valid.

My Passport was issued in Aug 2011, and is valid for 10 years, ie Aug 2021.

Because I renewed it early, the expiry date is May 2022.

But because we are no longer in the EU, overseas immigration, will only recognise 10 years from the issue date, NOT the expiry date.so my Passport is no longer valid.

The article said that the Post Office do a Passport renewal service.

Today, I called into the Post Office, and they confirmed, that the article is correct, and my Passport, may not be accepted abroad.

I therefore asked to have my Passport renewed.

The lady took me to a photo booth for my photo.

Then, asked me for my mobile No, and email address, and Passport, which they will send away.

I paid 91.50, for the service.

As I was coming out of the Post Office,, I got a text msg, to say my application had been received.

About an hour later, I got an email, to say my application would be processed, when they receive my old Passport, and they will forward my new on to me.

YOU HAVE BEED WARNED.

This makes no sense to me. Your passport was issued for 10 years in 2011 so it ran out in 2021. Where did the extra year come from ?

I

It's complicated.

Because, I renewed the Passport in 2011, before it expired, the " lost" time is tagged on so the new expiry date is extended to May 2022.

But overseas immigration, are saying, that they will only recognise 10 years from the "issue" date, NOT, the expiry date.

The Post Office confirmed this, so I renewed my Passpost.

OK, thanks for clarifying and I'm pleased you got it sorted.

Well I received a text saying they had received my old passport and I still don't have the new one.

My last one expired years ago.

You will have to go for an interview or a video call interview if your passport has expired.

Is that a definite thing if it's expired?

I have to go abroad for 4 weeks this week and yep, no choice.

But, I agree with you - exploring other cultures, foods, languages is so much fun. I love travelling in the UK, particularly Scotland but going abroad is something different.

Our son (19) has just renewed his, which is his first "full" 10yr passport. His previous 5yr passport expired in about September 2020 but he didn't see the need to renew immediately. He did NOT get asked to attend any interview.

My understanding is the interview is only if it is your first ever passport, and you are an adult requiring a 10yr passport. If you've previously had any kind of GB passport in your own name (including maiden names) then you do not need to attend an interview.

West Devon

I read that but it was already the case for overseas travel to Canat, America, Japan etc that they expect your passport to be valid X months after your return.

It was never the case for European travel when we were part of the EU. Now that we are not, the expection is the same.

That's how I understood it anyway.
