Trouble getting hard

Why is it so difficult to get hard toothbrushes nowadays? The one i'm using at the moment is like brushing your teeth with cotton wool.

I have neatly sidestepped that problem by getting an electric one. The vibrations work wonders. Brings a smile to my face.
